4th gear has more load... Hard to imagine no ever using 4th gear. But on the flipside, dyno's are not very good at showing actual street equal loads. Tune it perfect on a dyno, then pull out on the race track and things are suddenly different. But i think at this point, razor is looking more at tuning the E45 than "end all, be all" max tuning.

If you tuned a motor to the "razor's edge" of blowing up, then put it on the track/street and did a 0-145mlh run, it would prob blow up.

Why did you dyno it in third gear? 4th is closest to 1:1. Just wondering
A couple reasons. I think somebody asked this awhile back in the thread as well.

1. I like my drivers license
2. It's hard to find a flat and safe road for even a full sweep of 3rd gear from 2200rpm to 6500rpm+ in an urban environment, let alone a full 4th gear pull
3. The actual dyno numbers are low on my concern list currently, what I care about are the delta gains, which aren't really gear dependent.

This might be helpful and also offer some perspective.

Here is what my FiST, with my current 205/45/17 tires would be hitting MPH wise in each gear at 6500 rpm.

1st gear - 33 mph
2nd gear - 60 mph
3rd gear - 90 mph
4th gear - 119 mph
5th gear - 150 mph
6the gear - 178 mph

Yea, not going to be doing multiple 119 mph pulls in 4th every day... not only is that horribly unsafe, it's also just asking for trouble.

Was just asking. I know how fast the car goes. Was just wondering what your reason if any was for the third over 4th.
no big deal.

But on a dyno.... I'm not sure why that matters... I understand completely what your saying because my car makes it through the 1/4 mile in 3rd gear as well at 95/96mph, but at some point... Some where... At sometime... I'm doing to be at WOT in 4th gear. And it would be nice if the increased air resistance and less gear reduction didn't change the load and the tune requirements.

Cobb's tunes actually have gear dependent timing advance... Oddly... 5th gear runs more timing than 3rd and 4th.

It doesn't matter on a real dyno, other then you won't have the same airflow over the front of the car on the dyno at 110mph as you do on the street. The car hasn't seen a real dyno yet.

I'm also not just tuning the car based on 3rd gear pulls. I even posted a 4th and 5th gear WOT log a couple pages back. I was doing thermal loading tests. I tune the car for all around use, not just pretty dyno charts.

I have tuned cars from all over the world, from sea level to 7,000 feet, from -10*F to 120*F, from street cars with 200/300/400/600/700hp to track cars that have set class and track records. I don't say this to brag, but just to give a little perspective on my tuning strategies.

Abhhhhh !!! Ok. Your graphs said, "dyno jet" at the top. I thought you were mixing street tuning with part time dyno jet tuning.

Yea... No doubt, 4th gear pulls would be tough to do over and over again without driving 30min out of time for ever "session".

And no one is questioning your "tuning strategies", even if they were, who cares ? Lol. I think people are just showing an interest with questions. So while they are QUESTIONS, I wouldn't take it as anyone QUESTIONING you, lol.

Hell... I already said I'd buy your E45 tune. Need a tester/datalog from me? I do a lot of hard runs in what i feel like is the harshest environment for a turbo car in the continental US. If not, I'm watching with much interest. I'm pretty sure I've showed more interest in E30/E50 than anyone on the forums... I even run E30 without a tune for it when I can.

I wasn't feeling questioned, just wanted to give some perspective on how I think about my tuning strategies. :)

Are you concerned about our HPFP (High Pressure Fuel Pump) and its seals with repsect to high ethanol?
Being our cars aren't "Flexfuel" certified.
I know the Mazdaspeed GearHeads studied this issue extensively and found anything beyond 50/50 mix of corn to gasoline they had issues with the fuel pump spill valves.
http://www.mazdaspeedforums.org/forum/f567/kings-corn-hpfp-oil-122082/#post1565928
Being our cars share similar DNA it may be something to be mindful of.
Has anyone pulled out a HPFP yet to examine how serviceable it is?

Just found that razor lab is updating this project on the evo forums, so now I can follow replies in three places! Also I totally agree with the evo guys that $500-700 for a tiny intercooler is way expensive when the bilstein coilovers are $900

Also, is there a fourth forum?

The focus guys have a $500 cooler that is 5.5" thick !! I'm still going to the ebay route with welded tubes to the endtanks ($350). But this isn't really the "intercooler thread" :)

Did you get that from the 2J group buy?
Nope, I went through Todd @ TCE performance. I wanted the upgraded GT spec rotors and better pads. Still got them for a great price.

Ok, this is insanity. I ordered an Airtec FMIC from the UK on Wednesday this week.

Today, being Friday, two days later, guess what showed up at 10am?

Auto Specialists in the UK, you rule!

What was the final cost with shipping? I seem to like their design the best.
