After driving a Fiesta ST with a MRX I was bummed. The lag was too much for me. Perhaps it was the Mountune tune, I don’t know. It just didn’t come close to my expectations. That made me think about hybrids from Pumaspeed, Fury and Whoosh. Whoosh is always my go-to vendor, but his turbo wasn’t quite ready when this X47 deal presented itself. That said, I’ll install his hybrid later this spring after I’ve had time to run the X47 at a few different tracks.
MY GOODNESS! After a few revisions with Stratified, the X47 (not the R) is impressive. I shit on that turbo in a few threads but I stumbled upon a used one at a great price, so I jumped on it. My original X47 tune was with JST and I didn’t like it. We road tuned it and I also got an e-revision because the car was hesitating (or surging) when I rolled on throttle in 3rd-6th. In the early stages it wrenched during the surging because of something related to torque. I have no clue.. I can’t even read a dyno graph so tuning ain’t my gig.. I’m sure Brian would eventually figure it out but I don’t have a lot of spare time to mess with it or drive back down to Dublin to put it on the dyno for troubleshooting. And other than saying, “I want it to drive like my stock turbo with the Stratified tune”, I don’t really know how to articulate how I want the car to feel. That just seems like a dick thing to say to another tuner, especially someone as kind and generous as Brian, so I decided to solicit Strat.
I thoroughly enjoyed my Stratified stock turbo tune (and I had store credit) so I decided to give them a shot at the X47. My car feels just as responsive as it did with their stock turbo tune, but there’s a lot more power. A lot! I haven’t strapped my car to a dyno because I don’t particularly care about power numbers. I just want a faster track car. I noticed boost never exceeds 25.49 with the Stratified tune, whereas the JST tune would regularly hit 26-27. The JST felt like a Service Honda 500cc 2-Stroke and the Stratified is more like a modern KTM 450SX-F 4-stroke. If you’ve never ridden either of those, you should. Regardless, I’m thankful to have all these options for my shitty little Fiesta. I look forward to upsetting egos on track real soon. Bring the Spring!!
Also, the whistle really does suck. It’s fucking AWFUL. I mean, I’d rather hear my kids fight on a 6hr road trip than listen to that damn whistle. I keep earplugs in the car now. It’s that bad. I really hope the Whoosh Hybrid is less offensive and just as powerful. If it whistles too, I’ll reinstall my stock airbox like jeff did.
One more thing.. Thanks to jeff for the fancy “X47” badge. It’ll be displayed proudly!
