How do the Depo and DHM Factory Fit compare?
Depo Racing
Core Dimensions:
28" x 6" x 3"
Volume: 504 cu in / 54.3% difference over OEM FiST IC
Front Surface Area: 186 sq in


DHM "Factory Fit"

What about performance wise?
I looked at both of them. If you pull off that plastic trim piece for the stock FMIC, I would be inclined to think that the depo racing would have a "slight" advantage in cooling due to it having more surface area for air to pass through. I think the DHM intercooler you are looking at will have an advantage in flowing a bit more air and have a lower pressure drop based on what the end tanks look like. In the real world though, they'll pretty much do the same thing. Most (not all) of these intercoolers are well designed and "big" enough for everything except for a big turbo upgrade. Some even do alright with that.

I fabricated together a J-line into my FiST and it is almost impossible to heat-soak it. That thing is massive, but there is some cutting involved,not of the actual painted bumper cover itself though. That might not be your cup of tea.

If you want to start a relationship with a company, DHM is THE company for the high end FiST turbos. I'm not affiliated with them, I just buy their stuff that I can afford, heh. Russ seems to be a cool guy, really knowledgeable too. The pressure drop of the DHM Race IC on a tiny factory snail, along with some hesitation on whether or not I will EVER go hybrid/BT, are the only things keeping me from the full DHM Race IC/crash bar setup.

Nah I have depo Racing and it's been nothing but great service and solid products. On top of that the items came the fastest out of any other company I've dealt with. Been working real good with my x37 as well. Tims a solid guy

Installed a Depo intercooler on my wife's car. The only issue I took with the fitment was with a couple of the air dam brackets. The lower air dam bolts to plastic brackets in the area of the crash bar and the end tanks on the intercooler. There are metal fittings the bolts secure into and those fittings and their sharp corners rest directly on the front surface of the end tanks. The bolts also rest on or very near the end tanks. Best I could do is try to bend the offending fittings flat, then I used the rubber end tank caps that came with the intercooler and slipped them between the fittings/bolts and the end tanks. Should be enough to minimize scoring on the end tanks.

Upgraded to Stage 2 on the AP after the intercooler install. Weeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee. Much smoother overall power delivery. Wife noticed too. I think MPG has taken a hit though. I'll check mileage after my wife does her normal commuting for a while.

Guys, when you install intercoolers, please scale them and post WEIGHT difference with stock intercooler please! Most (if not all) aftermarket FMIC manufactures do not post weight information, probably because they do not want to scare their customers. I am strugling to find any information about how much stock intercooler weight vs aftermarket ones. I don't think I am alone here, who's concerned about added mass to the nose of car, which significantly affects handling. So far I am leaning towards Mountune FMIC, but won't buy it until I have clear weight information.

Honestly the performance increase of an aftermarket IC out weighs the extra pound or two of added weight for me. If you are that concerned with the minimal weight increase over the performance then why bother upgrading at all.

My aftermarket IC weighs 10 lbs. So that means the difference has to be less than 10 lbs. I can imagine most aftermarket IC won't be all that much heavier and make that big of a difference. We could all probably hit the gym and see more gains.

From what I have gathered the Mountune FMIC is not very effective (see post, temps rise 40F). It weighs the least but also seems to be the least effective. I think for the price point you can spend your money better on a different intercooler. If you are that concerned about weight the Mishimoto direct fit is probably the best way to go in terms of effectiveness and weight. It is tube and fin so it will be one of the lightest out there. I'm assuming the Mishimoto you have listed at 13.4lbs is probably the J-Line and not the direct fit.
