And where is it located? Is it part of the rear axle assembly?

Twist beam, also known as torsion beam, is a beam that "twists" to provide suspension action. It's in the rear of our cars. It's simple, easy to manufacture, and cheap. Only downside is the fact that you don't get any adjustment in alignment. If it's bent & your toe is out, it's time to find a new torsion beam.

Most alignment shops carry Volkswagen shims from the rabbit days to shim the beams for toe corrections. The beam can also be cut and rewelded at the hub for permanent toe correction. That’s usually trial by error and beyond the scope of what most alignment shops will be willing to do, but is likely less labor vs beam replacement.
