I saw this article and have been following Mazdas new car line up releases lately. A New Hothatch/Mazdaspeed product may be in the works....Now that Ford has taken a Dump on its Performance ST division.

Mazda has to form partnerships with other companies to produce new products. This is going to prevent the Miata effect from being applied to them from inception. The MX5 is probably the only Mazda product that will be immune from the predation of its core design philosophy. All other products are being rationalized to get the greatest sales volume. That's why the new 3 is sedan only and the manual transmission is only available in a hi spec package.

There's a hatchback for the new model. For the manual transmission you're right, at least for the US as in Canada it's the other way around; the pricier package is the only one that can't have the manual transmission (and all the awd packages)
