In other cars, when you got to big power, we swapped the final drive for taller - numerically smaller- gears to make more use of the added power in each gear. Would make 2nd gear really long, for example, bit less shifts to get to a target speed. Often made managing traction a bit easier too for high torque on street tires.

I would absolutely do this if there was a taller final drive available. I’ve only ever come across a shorter one.

I would def do a taller final if available. In the DSM days tall slicks would do the job for the most part especially in the auto's where you only used 3 gears for the 1/4 mile.

very informative thread, i've read all the pages and would like an advice.

I'm from Italy, Rome, got a 12/2016 St Euro spec ST, 88k km 1 owner, and could get my hand con a s280 with just 3k miles.
Being on a budget is a feasible route to go s280 with simple 3" decat downpipe on stock exhaust, stage3 ic and intake, on 95ron/91 mon octane low boost?
Then down the line i will upgrade exhaust, maybe injectors, crossover pipe, boost cold pipe, and go full retard on 93 Water/meth.

How much would you would expect for 91 tune with catless downpipe, Ic and intake on a safe tune for DD?

You definitely need a tune to run the s280 properly . I run a Mountune catted downpipe cobb intake , intecooler with a tune , flashed from a CoBB AP tuned by tune+ and put out roughly 284 whp and 284 wtq on 91 . I assume you guys are not using AP’s over there but there are several tunes available for your setup from UK tuners. I suggest you look into it. Should not be expensive.

yes i mean with a specific tune for this setup, to my undestanding we don't get AP across the pond, bad luck for us.
We have different tuners with Hp tuner RTD or handheld devices, like TRS,LP,etc. with multiple onboard maps, datalog and rear/clear codes.
To me the AP is a span above....but this is what we got :-(.

So you think i would get be around the 300 crank hp mark on this setup?

you should be able to. The Turbo breathes more than the car can flow on stock fueling so considering I am running stock fuel and pushing 27lbs boost on 91 with my numbers you should have no problem

Finally just ordered a hybrid S280 turbo plus Revo stage 4 tuning pakket with other parts as well, here are the list:

- Airtec intercool stage 3
- Turbosmart BOV plumb back
- Denso iridium TT power Spark plugs 4x

These parts is what i already have in my car:

- Revo air intake system
- Revo rear torque mount
- oh and stage 1 revo

I kept it to a minimum and didn't go over board with the parts. I hope that these will be okay with the new turbo for now or do i need to buy other part too.
The garage ask if i wanted to buy the Airtec turbular manifold too, because this won't have installation cost. I have been looking around online and decided not to install it for now. Also the exhaust system is all stock and i would like to keep it that way for now or is this going to bring down the potential of the s280 turbo?

Looking to go S280 at the end of this year and planning out all the parts required. Will also reach out to the tuners I'm considering for their opinion but don't want to bug them just yet. If I want to go to a maxed-out (i.e. above 350whp on E35/E50 with all the necessary supporting fuel mods) solution, at what point will my ancient Depo Racing intercooler and ST200 airbox with AFe panel filter be a limitation? Would the Whoosh V3 intercooler be enough of an upgrade, or should I go with something else? What intake are people running at those power levels?

I was told any airbox based intake would be a restriction with a “Big” turbo. I had the ST200 and am moving to the Whoosh ram air.

I was told any airbox based intake would be a restriction with a “Big” turbo. I had the ST200 and am moving to the Whoosh ram air.
I ran a ST200 intake on big turbo with 280whp. If you’re adding fuel too, maybe want a bigger intake but otherwise the ST200 is fine.

A very reputable tuner. I won't mention names because I'm sure some have other opinions and don't want to start a flame war. I'm sure you could run a stock airbox up to 400whp which I have heard also, but are you leaving anything on the table by doing so?

That sounds like the Tuner does not know how to tune for the Turbo, and ya it’s so not true. ( I ran my S280:with the Whoosh crossover and the Mountune Intake hose and the ST200 Airbox ( pretty much stock with a cold air attachment on the bottom for several years with a Tune+ tune and the car pulled all the way to Redline. I switched it out for a COBB carb legal 3 inch intake that attaches to the stock airbox bottom in my case the ST200 and it still runs great.

Ya like DH said you can run a ST200 airbox which is actually a stock item for the car in the UK and like I pointed out above it’s only difference is the bottom is opened up for a cold air tube.

I think the problem is above pump gas numbers. To where you get into full fuel and E30-E85 300whp upwards. It becomes a game of inches and if getting rid of the stock type airbox removes a real restriction, then I'm all for it. I know with the St200 airbox my car sounds like it wheezes a bit. You can hear that by also muffling the sound it's possibly killing some flow. I'll soon find out soon as Install the Whoosh intake and tune revision.

been proven many times, the OEM airbox or equivalent becomes a restriction at about 300hp

I agree with Ron my setup has never been above 300HP but also My Cobb intake setup is not a stock Airbox either but I ran E30 with the ST200 box and pulled a hp or two under 300 and 340 ft lbs of TQ. with my S280. Oh and that was as far as I could go with E30 without adding fueling of some kind. It was kinda like a E30 base tune for lack of a better way to explain. Adam said I would have to add fueling to datalogs and tuning after that. I considered the injector route for a minute but with the TQ steer decided it was not worth it.
Also I did not experience any stumbling or lack of power at 5k or above with the ST200 box on the 91 pump gas or the E30 Tune. It makes perfect sense above 300 the stock Airbox would be restriction though.
Anyways it was fun.
