Performed a bit of maintenance today....

Date: March 14, 2015

Mileage: 6,395 Miles

- Pennzoil Platinum 5w-20 Full Synthetic
- Motorcraft FL-910S Oil Filter
- BG 44k (PN 208) Fuel System Cleaner

Completed my 3rd oil change today and figured it was about time to make the switch to a full synthetic. My research has shown that the Amsoil Signature Series and this Pennzoil Platinum seem to be the best available for our cars (at least in terms of NOACK). I was very tempted to try out the Amsoil as I have heard great things, but the Pennzoil is so readily available and cheap I decided to go that route ($25 for 5 quarts at Wal-Mart BTW!)

After speaking with some more people and checking out a few additional tests by BG, I'm gonna give their products a shot for piece of mind, if anything. Just did the Fuel System Cleaner at this OCI will do PNs 208 and 109 at the next interval...

Been a while since any updates! Today, after 2 long months of being back ordered, my Wilwood BBK finally came in! Kit looks very complete and very high quality. Excited to get everything installed and setup. Ended up going with the red calipers, solid rotors (street car) and BP20 Street Performance pads.

Car looks great man. Tastefully done. I like.

Why would you need to do the 109 treatment though? You really can't beat the PP from Walmart. What did you use for your other oil changes?

I feel like sometimes I over worry myself about DI goop in my intake ports, but after my experience with the VW, how can I not? I may just do Techron once every few months especially with the city driving I do. Buy a case, not have to worry so much. The problem is, the reports of people's oil smelling like it when they drain the oil after using it. I do use V-power exclusively because everything else (even other Top Tier fuels) has given me piston carbon problems on my other cars.

Thanks man! For the first 2 oil changes I used the Motorcraft Semi-Synth. I will do the 109 and 208 treatments at the next oil change interval because that's whats recommended by BG and their reps and I do trust them. Their R&D seems very thorough and their track record speaks for itself. I think our worries about excessive carbon build up are deserved. Based on other Ford DIT cars and DI in general its a known problem. Time will tell how it affects the Fiesta ST specifically. I run Shell 91 exclusively as well and its never given me any issues *knocks on wood*

Well I think those that don't put any effort in to it will suffer, but those of us that try to avoid it will get some good mileage before it becomes an issue. People want to pretend cars don't need maintenance, and manufacturers have gotten better with it, but with GDI we have to worry about a different kind of maintenance.

As for the 109, in my experience of pulling 180k+ engines from the junkyard, you can tell which engines didn't get their oil changed at the proper intervals. Not that there was any noticeable extra wear (all have been within factory spec), but there was some extra varnish in there, but not something to worry about. Nothing like the pics you see online of the engines that never got their oil changed. Besides that, there's nothing wrong with some varnish building up. Aircraft mechanics are forbidden from removing it during rebuild time if it doesn't need to be removed from honing or some other machining process. I'm just saying, I see no reason to run an additive through the oil to keep the crank case/upper valve train so clean. Not trying to start an argument.

Awesome stuff, Tom! That BBK is gonna look awesome on your car. Did you find any shortcomings with the stock brakes or you just wanted some bling?

I hear what you're saying and that does make sense.

Thanks man! The stock brakes are great and my only complaint was the massive amount of dust. Main reasons I went for the Wilwood kit was the bling, increased braking power and the 10+ pounds per corner savings should make the car feel much lighter on its feet.

FINALLY!!

Date: May 17, 2015

Mileage: 8,125

Mods:

- Wilwood Big Brake Kit - 140-11899-R
- Wilwood BP-20 Pads
- Wilwood SS Lines
- ATE Typ200 Fluid

This past Sunday after sitting on this brake setup for quite some time, we finally got around to installing! I really wanted to make sure this was done correctly and I didn't trust myself to get it all done solo. I enlisted the help of my good friend who's a master Mercedes tech. The install is very straight forward on this setup. Willwood offers both written instructions and a pretty in depth video outlining how to get it all done. One note about the video: it seems the caliper has gone through a redesign. In the video he installs the pads with the caliper mounted, this is not possible with the caliper that came in my kit. Also, the brake shield does need to be removed, this is also not shown in the video. Lastly, my car only took 1 shim to get the rotor centered.

In terms of performance, I am extremely impressed. The BP-20 pads are very quiet, but have excellent initial bite and when you get into it, the car decelerates HARD as you would expect. ABS still works fine and I haven't experienced any vibrations or noises. The weight savings is instantly noticeable and this is one of the main reasons for going this route. Steering, shifting, accelerating and just everyday driving, the car feels much lighter on its feet.

I know the rear calipers don't match and that's something that I'm working on. Ideally, I would like to source a set of OEM red rears, but they've been a bit difficult to find second hand. May just end up painting them. On to a few photos....

Milage: 8,995

Mods:
- OEM Molten Orange Recaros
- OEM Molten Orange Rear Seat

As this car is my daily, when I originally purchased it I figured the base seats would be the better option for day to day use. I spent a little bit of time in my friends Recaro equipped car and soon learned I had made a mistake. This set popped up on eBay and after watching them for a few weeks the seller lowered the price a little and I pulled the trigger.

For anyone looking to do this swap its very straight forward (the rear seat is actually more difficult) with just a few things I should mention. If you want OEM functionality of the heated seats its not easy. The harness behind the switches is different and the harness going to the seats is also different. It would definitely take some work to get the OEM setup working as it came from the factory. I suppose you could just wire up 12v and some switches, but that's not good enough for me. For now, I'm just going to rock them without the seat heaters hooked up. Secondly, disconnecting the seat harnesses. I jumped the gun a little bit and disconnected the seats without disconnecting the battery. This WILL cause an airbag light to pop up. Disconnecting the battery will NOT clear the light. Oddly enough, resetting the ECU via the AccessPORT DID clear the airbag light and all is well.

After spending a little time in the seats, I'm in love and I can now see why the majority of people go for this option.

Because the seats came from a wrecker I knew they were going to need some work to get them looking good. Before installing them I spent a good few hours cleaning, conditioning and protecting both materials on the seats. Take caution when doing this as some fabric protectors will stain leather and vice versa.

Some pics....
