It was originally tuned by Adam from Tune+ and I was in the process of getting a 100 octane tune through DHM when the cylinder went out. I don't feel like it was a tuning issue but more of a "I abuse the crap out of the car" and the rings gave out. At least that is my assumption right now until we take apart the engine.

Props for going to 100oct !!!
No your right... any car or parts used on road course's have a "no explanation required" excuse to fail at any time for no reason.

Having driving and ridden many miles at Sebring International race way, I can tell you, road course driving it epically hard on EVERYTHING. But it's also the most fun I've ever had in a car ( and yes... I'm thinking of EVERYTHING ).

Props again for documenting everything the best you can Pete. I'm a little jelly. I tried to do it in the beginning, I'm just so busy lately... and I have -100 on video editing skills and the hardware to
Do so... every time I use a go-pro, I screw it up lol

Thank you! Believe me I have had my share of GoPro issues. Maybe one day I will upgrade to better camera equipment but I feel the gopros work just fine right now. I will say I am glad the engine gave out while I was in town otherwise it would have been an addition expense having to get towed home from a track 3+ hours away. I am not "planning" for more power after the rebuild as I want to work on driver skill way more then just throwing parts at the car. I am hoping with the increase in compression ratio from the new pistons I will be able to hit 300+ hp running my modified stock cat. Regardless of final power numbers I feel it will be an incredibly reliable engine to abuse on the track again and again. If later in the future I decide for more power I will stop myself at 350 as I want to keep the long term reliability even though the engine will be built to handle way more then that. I also agree that being on track is the most exciting thing I have ever done. It is quite the adrenaline high to be pushing yourself and your vehicle to the limits. Often times I have to remind myself (more so in the braking zones) that the car go do more and go further but my body is screaming to hit the brakes early haha.

Before I got to drive on the road
Course, I was exposed to a couple of epic drivers ( one has run in World speed challenge races !! ). And I kind of felt that I would get bored. I thought, "once I get the corners figured out, it's going to get boring". What I found was... I could not hit the corners correctly but 1 out of 5 times, lol. Let alone string them all together. And at Sebring, there is a spot where you stay flat and go through a few curves at 75mph and you just have to focus and stay in it.

All that... and I was driving a car that is prob WAY WAY WAY easier to drive than the fist ( or at least to get right ). My 6-speed G35 coupe was pretty forgiving. I never did get the braking correct... cooked the Brembo's all day.

Had an Epic day up at DeadHook Motorsports today. Took over 30GB of video on just the first day! I want to move up here and work for Russ! He just has some amazing things that I can't wait to show everyone once I put the video together. But for now here are some teaser pictures of my Engine. I am exhausted and would love to write more but there is another big day tomorrow!

Here is the extended shop tour of Deadhook Motorsports. This is for those people really wanting in depth look on engine builds. Thank you again Russ for allowing this all to happen. The next video will be posted next week where the engine gets torn down!

Great documentary. Having said that was disappointed not to see what the deal with #3 is. When's the next episode?

Thanks for sharing this with all of us. The journey from parts to design rationale to engine builds to your engine as it was sent to Russ is a cool way to present the first part of your rebuild.

My brother-in-law builds engines in a Porsche racing shop, its amazing how similar top builders' shops look. Of course Russ would not have a late '50s 356 4 cam roadster in a corner that should be in a museum.

Then again, we are living a golden age of performance with our cars: power to weight, chassis stiffness, handling, functionality and economy that would have astonished ole Ferdinand.

Your build thread is setting a high bar for the rest of us.

very cool video. Russ and his setup remind me a lot of AWDTuning down here in Texas. They are Subaru specialist, but share many of the same philosophies and ginger beards

#1 are we going to get a video of the bottom end gear down etc ?

#2 if that looks time consuming and like a lot of work.... that's because IT IS. I did all that in the car and it was no fun at all. Lots of good tips, but also an example of why having a Russ do this is best lol
