Finally home from my 2nd annual Tail of the Dragon adventure

From NC to NH yesterday was 1030 miles in 15hr 50mins

A total of 2700 miles since Tuesday at 33.7 avg MPG and a total of 13 different states. NH, MA, CT, NY, PA, NJ, MD, VA, WV, TN, NC, SC, and GA.

Sampled some of the absolute best driving roads in the entire country in the area known as the Smokey Mountains:

Tail of the Dragon - Needs no introduction. 318 corners in just over 11 miles.

Cherohala Skyway - A beautiful mountain pass that peaks at over 5300 feet in elevation. Fast sweeping bends. Stunning views

Moonshiner 28 - A mountain pass that has wonderful highly banked corner after corner. Travels from TN all the way to GA.

Devils Triangle - Even more challenging, and definitely more dangerous than the Dragon, with significantly less traffic.

Blue Ridge Parkway - Did this at night, so not much scenery, but a great driving road nonetheless.

The TOTD drive is best done on weekdays....too damn many idiot Harley Riders doing 20 mph on week ends. Many good roads in E. TN and W. NC. I live in E.TN and the FiST was made for these roads. Took the FiST and Mustang GT to the W. NC back roads. W.Virginia has some good ones we tore up in the Mustang.

Did the same trip this year. It's a bit less of an adventure for me, from where I live.

Next time down there hit up TN 421 (down and back) I like it more than TotD. A LOT less traffic, more speed, but still retardedly twisty with sweepers thrown in. Then again, there's actually a few roads twistier than the TotD and that have 0 traffic, to boot. That said, I get why TotD has it's charms, it's the damned slow traffic that kills it. Weekday mornings is the key.

I've done the Blue Ridge and while traffic is a problem during the day the views are tremendous. As for Tail of the Dragon, that is on my Bucket list. Going to print out your post because I'll be retiring in a few years and you've given me some ideas. BTW, just love ideas that involve driving my FiST.

Great thread!

A group of us hit up the Blue Ridge Parkway a few times per year, being that its in our backyard.

I really want to take off a couple days from work and drive to the Tail. But its hard to get away in the middle of the week to avoid traffic.

I have built my FiST specifically for the mountain roads here in the Southeast. And in our area, there are some great spots less than an hour away.

Great Post! A Buddy and I did TOTD and Cherohala Skyway this past summer. It was evident within the first few turns that this is where the FiST thrives. That being said, he had some trouble keeping up with his FoST in the tight stuff :)

I love making this trip. The last two times I went were in my boyfriends car and not my own though. Hopefully in 2020 I'll be able to do it.

My Fiesta is....

Cobb protune
Eibach springs
RMM
Traction bar and Torsion Bar
Konig 16*8
205/50/16 re71

It felt absolutely incredible on that road. I felt like if I wanted to, could be one of the faster cars on that road.

I did not need to brake very often, but was able to hold a very steady pace without much accerlating between corners
