Road trip to Tail of the Dragon

Had a great past week full of adventure!

(THIS WILL BE A LONG READ!)

Started as a couples vacation. Me and my 2 best buds brought our wives and rented a cabin overlooking downtown Gatlinburg. My brother Steven goes every year for a Forester meet. He has a 2009 XT on an STI suspension putting 340hp/370tq to the wheels. Him and his wife leave a day early(Wednesday), and break down 7 hours in on a 10 hour trip. He thinks it's a fuel pump issue, so I pick one up from IAG in Westminster when they open at 8am(Thursday). (only a couple hours out of the way)
The rest of us make it to him around 2 in the afternoon. Our friend Frank takes the ladies the rest of the way so they can get to the cabin. (wives were not interested in replacing a fuel pump in a parking lot!) I helped my brother replace the fuel pump in about an hour. No issues from there on. Friday morning we see a bear right outside our cabin! Took lots of pictures. In the afternoon we decide to detail our cars because Saturday is cruise day! Around 9pm we are cleaning up our buckets and towels and such when Frank noticed Stevens dome light come on in his Forester and the rear passenger door was open. He saw movement but couldn't make out what it was. Then he saw a bear climb into the front seats! The car was on an incline so the door shut from the shaking in the car. The sound of the door closing made me look up. There was a bear in my brothers car! Frank runs into the cabin yelling "there's a bear in the car, there's a bear in your car Steven". The bear is now stuck in the freshly detailed car facing the front passenger window. I go around to the door and open it. We try to scare the bear out, but he liked drying his feet on the clean seats! He finally steps out and walks away. The next morning we inspect for damages. No damage to the any cars except for mud prints! We could tell it tried 3 doors of Franks Edge ST first by the paw prints. Luckily his was locked. This bear KNOWS how to open car doors! If Stevens was locked, he would have gone to mine next! So, that morning we do a quick clean up and take a cruise to Fontana dam where the Forester group meets. Nice drive in a beautiful area! Lots of elevation changes. After that we head to Tail of the Dragon. Frank Steven and I all had our wives riding shotgun. This is honestly the most fun I have ever had in my car! Made a pass up and my coolant temps reached 230. Ambient was 70-75. I let it cool down at the top. There is a decent parking area at the north end. Lifted hoods, and we all talked for a bit about the drive. Lots of nice cars driving by! I watched my temps on the way back and could adjust my driving to keep them in check. (I have a radiator on order) Sunday we did some typical Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge tourist stuff. Rolled out Monday morning and all else went well!

Sounds like a great trip. We were going to hit up Deals Gap but then the fuel shortage raged through Georgia and we were concerned we couldn't find petrol. So we didn't go.

Check out the Skyway sometime as well if you get back there.

That bear though...

We came across a few stations along the trip that didn't have fuel. We tried to play it safe and stay topped off when we could.

TOTD is a road the FiST was designed for......so many smiles per mile. And the gas station/ food joint had 93 octane non-ethanol gas. And decent food. Weekends can be a bummer with slow Harley's and "sport" SUV's blocking the road. Why someone would ride a hog or SUV on the TOTD is beyond reason except to piss people off. Have had more than one run ruined on weekends by idiots. Many will pull off, lots of places to do that. Some won't!

Find a local store/bar with a BBQ grill smoking in front and eat the only food in W. NC/ E.TN worth eating, TN BBQ. Unless you like vinegar and mustard stay away from NC BBQ! If you stay in the Gatlinburg area locate the trout farm place where you catch one (5 seconds) and 20 minutes later you are eating the freshest fish in the world. Worth the drive! And look for an A&W Restaurant. Get a Root Beer in a frosted mug, it is made fresh in the stores each day. Best root beer in the world.

The thing about the TOTD is there are no cross roads or driveways to "impede" traffic flow. And never have I seen a cop. This road is an income producer for the locals so no harassment, great trip!

I don't eat pork or red meat anymore haven't in years but NC barbecue is excellent.

I definitely prefer the North Carolina side of the mountains much more peaceful and small town vibe vs Tennessee being a giant tourist trap. Just not my style. Kind of like our beaches North Carolina peaceful South Carolina tourist trap.

Gatlinburg is a hell hole of traffic and tourist junk. The only reason to go through there is to get to the Trout Farm!

Awesome, thanks for sharing. I've been planning a trip down there for a while, just haven't had the time. It's a good 14 hour drive one way for me, too.

If you can skip 95 and go west to the I-81, many nice scenic roads in Virginia around I-81. We broke in wifes Mustang GT Coyote along there 2 years ago. Great roads. Take some time and travel the scenic byways. Stay in old fashion motels in small towns. Eat in small local restaurants. Get away from the interstates and fast food. Have picnics at roadside tables. Slow life up for a week. You'll talk about the trip for years.
