Hoonigan Racing?s Ken Block gave Ford a hometown victory today in the inaugural Red Bull Rallycross race on Belle Isle, the first of two GRC events this weekend.
Piloting his Ford Fiesta ST to its third victory of the season, Block took first place in the 10-car final, a popular win for Ford with its headquarters just a few miles away. Today?s race was the first time the four-year-old GRC series has held an event in the Motor City.
?It felt really good to go out there and put the Ford Fiesta out front. It?s one of those years where it?s just all going my way,? Block said post-race. ?Believe me, I?ve had some seasons where I?ve done everything I could and it?s all gone the other way, so I?m very appreciative to be sitting where I?m sitting right now.?
Saturday?s win at Belle Isle is his sixth in his career. It cements Block?s status as the Red Bull Global Rallycross driver with the most career wins in the series? history, and solidifies his lead in the 2015 Championship point standings.
?I?m battling for a championship,? Block said. ?I?ve got a good lead in that championship now. I?ve got three wins in five races, so things are going quite well. And I?m happy to do it here in Ford?s hometown of Detroit.?
Fellow Ford driver and Olsbergs MSE rookie Sebastian Eriksson took third at Saturday?s race after a few mechanical issues prior to the final. He is currently second in championship points, having earned one win and two additional podium finishes already this season.
The Ford Fiesta STs will be back in action Sunday, July 26th for the second round of the Detroit doubleheader event at Belle Isle.
