Thought I would start this thread...just ordered the Valentine 1 radar detector...had a close call when I got pulled over by a motorcycle cop blasting radar...just got finished pulling through 1st and 2nd...he got me doing 51 in a 35...he came to my window and I told him "these are not the droids you are looking for"...and I got off with a warning...soooo if anyone else has has this problem or has any stories about radar detectors, or has any opinions about which type of detector they prefer...swing away!!!

I wish I had the $ for a v1. Ive had a whistler pro58, and have a cobra that was given to me that I'm not using right now. The biggest thing with them is remembering they are not a cop detector, and if you're the only car on the road it's not gonna help you unless you have the laziest cop in the world just sitting there with his radar on. I try to have a "rabbit" in front of me, someone driving at the pace I want, that will get hit with radar first to warn me.

No doubt the best radar detector is someone in front of you slamming their brakes on after they see the cop too late..you just can't be so close to them that the cop sights you right after the rabbit...just to let everyone know, my incident happened going out to lunch travelling down a busy blvd...if I had the v1, I would have shut it down because the road is busy, and the detector would have been blazing from all the cars he was blasting...just figured 400 murican was worth it compared to increased insurance for 3 years

I'm with an Escort 9500ix. It's excellent
Same here. I recently hard wired the power to my fusebox with an ebay cable and an add-a-fuse. Works great. Turns on and off automatically when I start and stop the engine.

I've been fairly happy with my V1, all though I don't use it as much as I used to other than on long trips.

I commute 30 minutes on a highway known for being used by the local tuner crowd for "spontaneous competitions", so I try to be a little cautious.

Yeah, no doubt local knowledge is best deterrent to not getting whacked...and from the reviews I have seen, it is definitely between the Escort and Valentine...unless someone else has an opinion that will sway this debate....

Awesome deal on the Beltronics GX65 on woot.com right now. Exact same detector as the Escort 9500ix but you have to lockout the false alarms manually, the 9500ix does it automatically. Got one myself for my other car. The Fiesta gets the 9500ix I already had, butthe GX65 has the same guts for less $$$.

Seriously considering getting an Escort 9500ix after getting nailed with a 125.00 " highway premium" yesterday. Blah !! Although even a detector probably wouldn't have helped as they were using laser.

I use the 8500 x50, but noticed recently that it does not seem to pick up as much as it had over the past few months. I was ticketed by a motorcycle riding officer using "laser" and did not even hear a blip. How often do you all replace your units (or whats the best way to know if they're outdated)?

The 8500x50 is pretty old. The 8500x50 black has pretty much the same internals as the 9500xi but without the useful features like gps that remembers false positives and picks up laser before I could see the cop

Sounds like it is time for a replacement. Thanks!

Remember that Valentine was one of the two original developers of the Escort, and then went on to found Valentine Research...V1 has saved my ass enough times already to pay for it...and I have had for just a few weeks...and even in your daily travels, it is amazing how much radar blasting there is....towns and cities are broke, this is the new frontier people...and if you check out Valentine Reseach's website, they have supplemental gear to hook up to smart phones to give an enhanced view of the chirps you hear from the detector....ordered....worth it...buy it...and if you can't afford it...brake lights from the car ahead of you...and if you're speeding and there is no car ahead of you...may the gods save you from voluntary taxation...because you pushed the fast pedal all by yourself fella
