For me this would probably be my very last mod after everything else is done.

At which point you could look into a lighter flywheel and clutch as well as changing the gear set as long as you had it all apart ... Kinda spendy though ..

I had that planned when the time comes to get the clutch replaced lol. Have you researched a brand yet Rod? I haven't checked to see if Excedy made one for our cars yet.

I'm looking into an lsd but everyone who doesn't have one in their car offers their "get a Quaife" lsd simply because they're popular...but are they the best choice for a FWD car? There's this guy on YT who had a Wavetrac lsd installed and its 1k more or less for lsd & 1200 for labor. LSDs Ive seen go from 700 to 1200 and as of the last day of May 2021, I'm gonna start sourcing out labor in my area since apparently this is a 1-2 day process. So I'm as confused as I started off because keyboard warriors only offer advice based on second third or even fourth account info lol. I'm in Southern California btw.

Heh, the LSD changes things so much. The wet/snowy weather wheel hop is gone... it just claws and goes. As far as the different LSD's

MFactory - Taiwan based and what I got, it is by far the lowest cost option. A helical diff. plain and simple.
Quaife - UK based, what Ford used in the last gen RS, also what mountune sells as well. A gear type LSD as well.
Wavetrac - US based. It is the most interesting in terms of technology. It is still a gear type LSD but it has a propitiatory design where even if the wheel is unloaded, it still sends some power to the other wheel. That said is is in the low % points (maybe even single digit). Alternative to "open diff when unloaded" issue is simply a dab of brake (left foot braking perhaps?).

All 3 above are gear type LSD that more or less follow stock maint. intervals for fluids. Install and forget basically. There is also a KAAZ LSD somewhere I believe and plate types follow a maint. schedule closer to oil changes. Also has noise, and binding issues etc etc but they work "better" in terms of sending power to the other wheel.

Hope this helped.

PS: I got my LSD as my 3rd mod :p . Shocks > AP > LSD > (wallet recovery period) > wheels > IC & intake. Anyone that got one for either the Fiesta or Focus loved it.

I believe that Drexler (Aussie based) also makes a clutch plate type diff as well for the IB6 gearboxes (they definitely make one for the IB5s).

Well lets just if asking for advice don’t just start off calling potential advice givers keyboard warriors its not a great way to ingratiate yourself to potential knowledge.

That given I drove a Wavetrac in my friends car today. Its the one I wanted and after first hand experience driving it its the one I am getting.
You‘re in SoCal and FSwerks can do the install and have done quite a few of them. My friend went there I will probably go there.

Not a lot of places are familiar with installing LSD’s in our cars so finding places up on it, is a good thing.
FSwerks charges like $1100 for install. I know this because I called and asked.
It basically goes like this , if you don’t like spending money or do things on the cheap you get a Mfactory as they are like $600 .
If you want to spend around $300 more for quality you get a Quaife or a Wavetrac.
edit… official disclaimer insert. Not saying the MFactory is is not quality as it is made in Taiwan . Just that with a Quaife you buy the gold standard and with Wavetrac you buy new tech.

I like the patented tech of the Wavetrac screw having to do a brake pedal step when you need to engage the diff because one wheel is not on solid land so to speak.

^^^AGREED, and I wish that we had an experienced place around here, like FS Werks, willing to do this install for that little coin! [:(]

You will get some blowback from all of the Mfactory fans on here with the seeming implication that their diff is lower quality than the Quaife or Wavetrac. [wink]

Has anyone had a problem with the Mfactory? If not what is the problem with it.

Taiwan is not China they actually make decent stuff.

I have nothing against quality stuff made in Taiwan or China .

I just personally feel the tech in the Wavetrac is the best product out there. Some people may not think its needed or you can just use your left foot on the brake in those moments.

If the Wavetrac was not an option I would probably get the Mfactory over the Quaife because basically its a stone cold copy of it and $300 cheaper.

Lifetime warranty is not a big deal if a LSD is gonna have an issue its gonna be straight out of the gate. It’s the nature of the beast. The lifetime warranty is kind of a gimmick IMO.

edit …. I should add the Wavetrac has lifetime warranty as well.

Oh and yes there have been bad Mfactory diffs that they willing replaced. I have read a few posts on the net. It also does not mean their product is crap.
In manufacturing there is no such thing as 100% perfect.

FSWERKS does good work. Had my Wavetrack, Xclutch (recommend you use oem throw out bearing) and vibra technics transmission mount done there in Feb. Good time to upgrade the transmission fluid too. Its not a bad first mod but would not advise if not a more aggressive driver or you have no plans taking it to some driving event

Loving my mFactory LSD. Looks and feels solid out of the box as well. Many on the forums have it and have no complaints.

I agree with everyone else who says if they were doing the mods all over again I'd get a LSD first. Mine was basically my most recent mod besides the BA intercooler lmao
