Oil Life Reset

I got my oil changed for the first time about a month ago and I should have asked them to show me how the hell to reset the oil life. My vehicle health report says the life is at 18% which is obviously wrong since I just got it changed. I tried what it says in the manual like 5 times. The car was not in gear and the E brake was not up. Has anyone successfully been able to do this? From the manual:

1. Turn the ignition key to the on position.

Do not start the engine. For vehicles with push-button start, press and hold the start button for two seconds without pressing the brake pedal. Do not attempt to start the engine.

2. Press both the accelerator and brake pedals at the same time.

3. Keep both pedals fully pressed.

4. After three seconds, the Service: Oil reset in prog. message will be displayed.

5. After 25 seconds, the Service: Oil reset complete message will be displayed.

6. Release both the accelerator and brake pedals.

7. The Service: Oil reset complete message will no longer be displayed.

8. Rotate the key to the off position. For vehicles with push-button start, press the start button to turn the vehicle off completely.

That's the stupidest procedure. a simple menu, with a reset oil life option, and a confirm screen would have sufficed. Who comes up with this stuff.

I agree. Most cars have the easy option of just resetting in by going to the menu on the touchscreen and hitting reset. But no, this has to be impossible for ST owners. You'd think with an expensive car they would make our lives easier.

I tried to reset the thing after I changed my oil at 1000km. After failing to get it to work and reading about others having a problem I was wondering if it is only possible to reset the monitor only after it has indicated an oil change is needed. Just a thought.

That is exactly what came to my mind. But then I thought no that would be stupid because the damn thing would never be accurate then. Plus it would force you to drive around even longer with oil that's going bad

I am having a problem resetting the oil life indicator on my 2014 Ford Fiesta ST that I took delivery of on 10/18/2013. I recently had the oil changed at 4,300 miles and went to a full synthetic (Mobil 1 5W-20). For some reason I cannot get the oil life reset to save my life.

I took it into a local Ford dealership and they tried for an hour and couldn't get it reset either. They ran a VHR while I was there and it did not reset and the Ford service advisor and tech told me to run a VHR the next day to see if it reset so I did just that and the VHR shows 56 percent of oil life is left and has not reset.

The dealership ordered a new instrument cluster for my 2014 Fiesta ST after consulting with Ford and installed it yesterday. Even after going through all this it still will not reset the oil life. The dealership gave me my car back and they are still in touch with Ford to see what can be done to fix this so that the oil life resets.

My question is this. Does the 2014 Ford Fiesta ST even have the functionality to reset the oil life light. Perhaps the other Fiestas have this functionality, but it was left off of the Fiesta ST for some reason either intentionally or inadvertently?

Another possibility is that you cannot reset the oil life light indicator until it actually comes on. I have read up on this issue on 5 separate Fiesta ST forums and no one seems to know. Ford needs to publish this information so that their dealers and customers know how to reset the oil life if the functionality truly exists for this model.

It is a great little commuter car that is a blast to drive, but this non-functioning oil life reset indicator should function properly.

I agree it is weird and silly .. After reading the shop manual and thinking a while while reading the latest Grassroots motorsports magazine in my Fav reading room.. I thought Maybe the timer or oil life indicator needs to be lit or the wrench or what everthey use to tell you since if it not like the Honda or Chevy Truck we have that tells you % oil life left. I have not looked but I recall you can set the mileage for this reminder on the MFT menu system so maybe it is that backward that it only goes of that set milage.. anyone ever get the dash light and try to reset ?? Or maybe I am all wet on this just a thought ..

When I got my first oil change done they didn't reset it and now at 3500miles it's reading at 67% oil life according to my Cobb and "vehicle health report". I'm gonna try and reset it next time I remember.

What is the required oil change according to our ford manual? When I brought my car in for its first oil change at 900miles just to flush the stock crap out,the girl at the desk said to me: "Uhhhhhh ya know you don't have to get an oil change until every 10,000 miles" I told her "I really don't care and i wanted to flush out whatever little shavings/junk might be in there" I was going to explain how it is a good/proper thing to do with a new car,but figured it wouldn't be worth it and she could careless.

So does it really say to wait until 10,000 miles,I think that's crazy! When I hit 5k or so I'm going fully synthetic.

Well, my VHR is no longer even mention the oil life. I 'chatted' with some Ford online people, and apparently they have removed any information about oil from the VHR for 'some' VINs. Mine, according to the rep, wasn't on the list, and yet - nothing in the report. She said that Ford is "aware" about the FiST issue and "engineers are working" on it. So - useless.

I thought it was just me. My Focus would reset no problem. A progress bar come up and done. So are people driving with oil reminder warnings? I only have a little over 5k on mine.

I'm having the same problem with my '16 FiST. Changed the oil at 7k, orange wrench came on at 10,250. Tried the procedure above and nothing. I also noticed that the orange wrench indicator isn't even listed in my owner's manual. I also have the MFT.

And if you think the procedure for resetting the oil light is complicated, you should try resetting the TPMS!

I un installed my AP did the procedure and it worked. Check engine flashes and oil light stays solid during reset. Check oil life on AP after re installed and oil life 100%.

That does NOT work, at least not on my 2016 ST
(The indicator I got was the one that looks like a wrench, not the one that looks like the engine)
But the service advisor showed me how.
Without pressing the brake or clutch, use the pushbutton start to turn the car on (engine not running).
Press and hold the brake and Accelerator for 30 seconds, there are no notifications of any kind.
Release the brake and accelerator, and restart the car, the indicator light will be off.

The service guy said the indicator will come on every 6 months regardless of mileage.
(The manual says 10,000 miles or 12 months)

The method you quoted is for the focus and transit. With the more involved dic. The method you described is correct, both are the same, it's just a matter of what you're looking for.
