back on topic fellas which turbo is bigger the mrx or the turbo techniques s280? they are close in price point and both would get me to my target of 280 hp, I just want to get the more efficient one of the two with less heat being produced.
let us discuss

Well....this has been pointed out 1000 times....But s280 is journal bearing....MRX is ball bearing. Food for thought....Hornets Nest has been kicked.

Honest answer, S280 will be a easier install even with the grinding of the edge of the block. The V-band adapters suck on any Garrett based turbo and there is about a 1,000rpms gap in spool the S280 starting earlier of course. Power wise they'll be similar but the MRX would make for less wheel spin down low due to not having that mule kick spool. Heat will be arround the same I would have to guess.

But that cuts both ways - there are plenty of turbo builders that prefer journal bearings for smaller turbos and for race-application turbos given the built-in dampening and durability that a journal bearing provides.

The MRX is an older turbo: it seems to spool more slowly than the S280 and offer less total power with supporting mods. These days, I think the upgrade path is Whoosh Hybrid -> S280 -> GTX2860 Gen II *on a tubular manifold*.

I drive a lot around 70mph is the norm where I live seems like the s280 is better for this type of driving.

So, quick Update to this pretty much dead thread.

Went to the dyno today to try E50 mix a try along with higher boost. First pull with the old tune (previously 318whp on a different dyno) ran 305whp and 301wtq for my base pass. Later went ahead and tuned a bit, got up to 329whp. Torque didnt change much cause the bulk of it was done on the top end of the rev range. Still haven't finished the tune as it started having issues with the throttle closing in higher revs. Still good gains and hope to finish it up maybe gain 10-15whp more.

For reference the ambient was 88° and 44% humidity.

It’s a great turbo on aux but you can’t change the efficiency island no matter what you do.

I'm on the stock MAP sensor, I understand it doesn't read correctly past 29psi. So I'm thinking of stopping it there
Upgraded map sensor is only 70$ and is a 5min install for peace of mind and maybe a bit more power [emoji2369]

My map sensor is stock as well, and I consistently see 29.95psi. Never took it to be an issue, but maybe I need an upgrade

Would you have to upgrade the internals, or does the stock stuff handle it (i mean it's only 75 hp but still).

No, no you don't need internals. These engines are pretty tough as long as it's tuned properly you shouldn't have any issues.

Beyond 29psig, the 3 bar map sensor becomes incredibly inaccurate. You will likely want to upgrade to a 3.5 bar unit and have the tune adjusted for it.

Seems cheap enough to upgrade, I'll throw one in. Why will it need to be retuned?

The scaling is different. So say if 0-5V is for 0-44.1 PSIA with the 3bar TIP sensor now 0-5V is for 0-51.45 PSIA with the new 3.5bar TIP sensor. I could also be mistaken, this is just from my limited understanding.
