The two things hardest on an engine, RPM and tune.
Boost, when tuned right, works so well because 90% of the added power is made at the strongest part of the stroke only adding around 20% more load on the parts.
High RPM causes more load on the parts nearly all the time and you can only spin up there so often. If I recall what I studied many years ago, the added load is not linear, it is exponential.
You can use displacement all the time, especially where most of the time the engine is rotating at.
Displacement uses more fuel of course, all the time but will spool a bigger turbo much better than a smaller engine.
I would be more than happy with a 1.8 compromise with just right turbo and tune, it could make all the power, all around, anyone would ever really need unless an drag racer willing to give up daily driveability.
These are blanket statements, there are exceptions to everything, just depends on how much one is willing to invest into the outcome and what they deem they can live with.
