After finding no good info via searching I decided to compile what I learned here for folks in the future to have a quick and proven resource for key fob replacement.

So, I lost one of my 2 fobs and decided to get another so I'd have a spare. I ordered a cheaper ($30) generic fob on eBay, it looks just like ours except no Ford emblem, and had great reviews. I even located the little ford emblem for it so it looked OEM. However the dealer was unable to program it so I returned it.
Then I bought an OEM fob, yesterday the dealer programmed it and it works perfectly. Note, the dealer charges $180 for the OEM fob but I found one for $54.94 shipped on eBay at the link below, and it comes with a battery. Dealer did charge $62.50 to reprogram but still I'm happy that I saved some money.
So if this happens to you and you want an OEM fob that is guaranteed to be programmable, buy this one:
