Intercooler sprayer

Why not? I got no money left for some of the more expensive stuff I would like to do, so here are the early beginnings of my cheap sprayer. Started by disconnecting the rear washer hose from the pump since I never use it. Use the existing barb on the pump to attach some 4mm washer hose at $0.50/ft. Five way T fitting $0.79. Vacuum caps for T $0.15. Disconnected the wiper motor in the rear so it doesn't come on every time I presoak, free. Now I am out to find some fogger nooozles to finish it off.

I'll report back once I get it strap in. Then some test logging.

Here are the nozzles I picked up at the grow shop. 0.5gph foggers. I just shoved one into the hose to see the pattern. Seems good but positioning them will mean eveything to make good contact. I haven't ruled out drilling some holes in a small od pipe to try more of a manifold approach.

My version of a rear wiper delete. Pulled the wiper, pulled the hatch panel, unplugged/unbolted motor assembly. I inserted a 7/16x1 stainless bolt thru the rubber existing wiper gromment and backed it with a nut and washer. I didnt bother with a locknut because once you compress the rubber a little it will add tension to the bolt.

I had promising results in my Cobalt SS with spraying the air to water intercooler they had. Only dyno pulls, but picked up 10 hp and 1 ft lb by spraying after one run and before the next.

Noooo... you're supposed to route that tube in the cab and put some kind of beverage in the reservoir so you can make drinks. haha

Intercooler sprayer is looking good! How are you going to actuate it? WOT trigger? What if you used the rear wiper motor to power the sprayer then a WOT trigger to power the motor?

I think I use my rear wiper to much to delete it.

STi had one stock (04-07). It kinda worked. Part of the problem was the water tank was in the trunk and would just bake, so the water temp was pretty warm by the time it hit the IC. Some people activated the curcuit via a pressure sensor so when the car was above 10psi, the spray would activate.

Honestly, it never did a whole lot. Be sure to use distilled water and to get as even/atomized a spray as possible.

when I ran the Fiesta Movement ST for 35 back to back autocross runs on a very hot day, I sprayed the intercooler and tires down after each run using a water bottle filled with ice water. No idea how much it really helped, but it surely couldn't hurt.

When I goto the drag strip, I take a garden chemical sprayer with me. I first fill it 1/2-3/4 full of ice. Then add 1/2 container of rubbing alcohol. Then fill the rest up with water. By the time you get to the track and start making passes, 1/2 the ice has melted leaving you with a ton of liquid to spray. The liquid is ice cold, and really to evaporate. After a run, you turn the car completely off, and spray all the biggest metal parts of the engine you can. Wait 4 min and spray it again. Wait 4 min and spray is again. Wait 2 min and make another pass. Repeat.

The alcohol helps the mix evaporate, taking heat with it, as well as keeping it sensor safe ( if anything gets into a sensor, by the time you start tue car, its already evaporated ). The water helps absorb heat, keep the mix for being corrosive, and keeps it mostly free.

The fiesta, having a plastic intake manifold, doesn't make as much sense as it did with my srt4. The srt4 has a huge alum intake that acts like a heat sink, it was extremely effective on hot track days with the srt4.

Another idea about this IC sprayer idea, is to give a little more focus to the passenger side of the intercooler, it gets hot first.

Since I'm using my washer tank for meth injection.... My rear wiper motor is free, lol. But because I'm always short on time, I think I'll just wait until I can afford DHM's huge intercooler. But if you have the time, and don't have a budget to work with, this is prob worth while.

Dodge's "stage2 with toys" actually came with an intercooler sprayer as well. No one really "loved it". It came on automatically when triggered by the ecu, or you could manually turn it on as well. I got in trouble at the track because the front of my car would be dripping in the staging lanes, lol.

I plan on triggering manually using the rear wiper wash since its conveniently placed on the stalk already. If I see any decent results using this method I may go a step further with a hobbs switch, but that remains to be seen at this point. This idea was to keep me busy modding while my money tree blooms again. I'll have some more pics later today.

So I have tried two different setups so far.

This one I didn't get good results. I used the mister nozzles I had bought but they didn't seem to wet the cooler and positioning them would have been difficult without drilling forbidden holes.

This one I simply used a T and squished the ends down using some heat to create a fan type spray. In this position they soaked the last 6" at either end of the cooler. Unofficially I saw a 2 degree drop on a follow up run with a presoak. I am going to try one more idea. Adhesive mount is only temporary till I find something I like.

I could be totally wrong but my guess would be that this wouldn't be all that effective. To get really positive results you'd have to spray a larger portion of the intercooler, which being stock is only going to be able to cool everything so much.

You are somewhat correct. Sprayers being very effective is up for debate. But the passenger side of the cooler is the hot side so currently I soaking it well. Yes I need to spray a larger portion of the cooler which is going to be my third attempt.

I have used a similar sprayer on my Mini.
This is on my list for my FiST.
I am just waiting on a custom WOT switch that has been ordered.

If I see some more positive results I would be interested in WOT switch instead of a hobbs boost switch. Where did you find it?

The one I ordered is a custom made item.
It is based on a unit designed for another car.
It needs to be setup and made to work with the FiST (DI).
once it is received and made to work I will provide all the information.

For the record, I engineer fogging systems (among other things) for turbine generators for evaporative cooling. Even distribution and the highest atomization is key.

I had an idea for a complex system that would use 28psi, and a check valve to pressurize a tank that would have a fogger nozzle at the front of the intercooler. Of course... You mere morals would be stuck with 18-24psi, lol. It would only spray when you have boost :)

I would love to throw down some money for something crazy, but remember this a ghetto project. I don't have a pressure guage at home but I would venture the oem washer pump is about 20-25psi. You can find aftermarket washer pumps as high as 50psi for cheap.
