improving engine noise/exhaust note

Hello all

I have a MP215 package on my car installed the other day, definitely a pleasant surprise how much torque I picked up! really love the noise of my FiST when WOT accelerating up to 4~5k rpm, and getting pushed against the seat feels awesome. And also when lift off the throttle I can hear a slight hissing noise from the back, it sounds amazing. Is that a blow off valve?

Since this is my daily driver, I do not want to make it louder or have drone while on highway. I want to make the bov louder, and exhaust bang and pop while lift off (like my old mini cooper S did), making the engine sounds more exotic without making it much louder. What mods would allow me to do this? Any mods to sound tube I can do? It does not need to improve power or anything, I just want to hear better music coming out of the engine[grinking]

Cheers!

Boomba bov piece would give you more pssshhh sound I don't recall if the sound tube on this car had the foam bits in it like the 2011 mustang get did you could look see if it died removing them would allow more sound in the car.

I had and quite enjoyed an R56 Cooper S, and from what I've read the pops and burbles of the JCW version were programmed into the ECU rather than a natural result of the exhaust system. But just because I read in on the internet doesn't make it true [dunno]

Anyway, the only way I know of that you can make the exhaust sound like you want - without a custom tune perhaps - is to change the exhaust. Swap out the downpipe or maybe remove the resonator. But then you're also going to increase the sound level.

On the intake side the Mountune high flow induction hose will make the intake ever so slightly louder. Otherwise, like rodmoe said, the Boomba bov is a good way to start.

The Boomba BOV is quite loud and pronounced - check out videos beforehand.

Most intakes will improve the intake/blowoff sound themselves in varying degrees. I've read good things about Cobb/mountune (subtler increases in noise), Injen (louder), and 2J Racing Cowl Induction Kit (loudest?), depending on your preference.

I've installed the mountune silicone induction hose, and it's a great little mod, and sound improves a little, throttle response is more immediate, but it doesn't solve all of my "sound wants." My next sound upgrade will be exhaust, likely Cobb, maybe mountune, maybe FSWERKS. I've bought Boomba's Sound Symposer Delete kit, but am waiting to see how the symposer meshes with the new exhaust note before I choose whether or not to delete it.

I'm kind of looking into the same type of mods the OP is, basically just looking for better engine/exhaust notes before I start getting serious on performance mods. Question though, if I go with a muffler delete and add something like an Injen CAI without a custom tune is that going to start throwing engine error codes most likely?

I did a muffler delete on mine and I love the sound it can get a little loud around 3k other than that it sounds good and I get a lot of complements.

Abwise,

About what did that run you at a muffler shop? What kind of tip did you end up with?

I have a friend that welds so just the cost of pipe and tip I think 40 bucks and the Pep boys had a tip very similar to the stock look so I went with it.

My FSWerks intake gives just the right amount of turbo spool noise and blow off pshh. I recommend it. Install is straight forward and takes about am hour. A blow off spacer gives you pshh but no turbo spool noise.

I love my Injen intake, its really loud at first and i contemplated it being too loud, but within a day i was used to it. The BOV sound is so amazing with it too, if you keep out of boost its quiet as a field mouse.

But it does suck in hot air, that is no joke and had been seen on my AP screen for temps, it is a trade off that i am currently OK with given my high amount of freeway travel.

Nice. I'm mostly highway too but down in Florida should I be worried about the heat? Also I'll be running with the factory tune for a while yet :/

Intake and factory tune is just fine, you just will not get the max performance out of it you know.

I understand wanting more noise there, but i HIGHLY suggest getting an AP first, the tune REALLY wakes this car up BIG time.

Running an Injen intake you will see fairly high temps when stopped in traffic or drive through ETC from the IC heatsinking. Given that down here summer temps are about 115-120 daytime and 95-105 at night, results may vary.

Do your research though, I doubt injen is the best but it is loud for sure and does make more power as long as its not sucking up dragons breath.

How does that intake work in injunction with the big mouth snorkel? Temp difference?
No clue, yet. The temps here in SoCal have been brutal. I installed the snorkel yesterday. I will revisit this in a about a week, but in my honest opinion, I feel it's more of a cosmetic accessory rather than a heat remedy for the intake.

Looks mighty cool though.

I found the symposer really overwhelming and deleted it immediately. Even with only a K&N panel filter, I can hear a little bit more of everything else now (turbo spool, stock exhaust). YMMV but I highly recommend symposer delete first.
