Getting use out of the turbo in the low/mid range

This may have been talked about somewhere else, and I appologize for that, but has anybody found a way, without replacing the whole turbo, to get the ecoboost turbo to, idk the term, "kick in" a little bit sooner? It seems to me like the thing doesn't get going until you get way up in the rev range. You don't get that chub-inducing "Pssss" until you're at like 4-5k.

is this a factory restriction that can be lifted? or is there nothing you can do to the stock turbo, and your only choice is to replace?

Side-note, forgive me if this is a noob question. New to turbos.

I feel like mine gets going nicely at 3k. I have heard the accessport helps the power come on a little sooner as well.

are you talking about the turbo spool ? or the overboost function?

its a small turbo so imo its pretty good.

a quick tune gives it alot more.

A proper tune will have the turbo hitting full boost around 2800 rpm in 3rd gear on a 100% stock Fiesta ST.

Higher the gear, the quicker it spools.

That could be it. I may be confusing "the fact that there is boost to vent" with "if its making boost." But the more I think about it, the more I think i had an incorrect perception. I have been enlightened.

Or a tune in general. It really wakes up the car.

I've owned lots of turbo cars, granted none that are anything less than 10 years old but nonetheless this turbo spools quick.

The small 4 cylinder engine uses a small turbo that spools quickly with a short first gear, and shorter gears in general in order to "get around town" with much ease.

You are getting full boost anywhere from 2000-3000 rpms with the majority of the torque in that range also.

Trust me, this is an awesome setup and that is why it is so fun.

They have squeezed a ton of power without sacrificing turbo lag for more power up top.

Torque down low is more fun for a street car in my opinion.

As others stated a tune can help add a massive amount of torque to the lower rpms and a decent amount up top also, but just lean into the throttle down low and feel the power.

Mine is stock and second gear feels like it wants to spin around 2500-4000 rpms.... so yeah

I'm assuming your on a stock tune. You're not hitting full boost until 4k so that should explain a lot. Any aftermarket tune will unlock your turbo to spool up full as low as 2500rpm and gain a lot of torque with just software

If you drive around with a boost gauge fitted, it soon becomes apparent that you don't get full boost until around 4000rpm.
This is not because of the turbos maximum boost threshold which as mention is around 2500rpm it just the way the ECU is controlling boost, probably to limit torque and wheel spin.
It annoys the crap out of me and main reason plus the boost limited in first and second gear to get a tune. (IMO)

Here's a graph to illustrate what they are saying.

This is the Cobb Stage 1 flash on a stock car. You can see the biggest gains are in the low end torque, which you'll definitely feel driving around town.

Since it doesn't cost anything, and it's worth checking (since a lot of people reported it from the factory). Check your clamps on your charge pipes. All locations are listed here http://www.fiestast.org/forum/fiest...ntercooler-clamp-locations-sticky-please.html

Some are kinda hard to get to, but you should be able to jiggle them and check if any feel lose.
