Ok, so I am planning on rebuilding my engine that I recently found metal shavings in. While I’m in there, I want to do some upgrades.
Turbo: I’d like to find a turbo with a similar midrange power band as the stock turbo, so probably a hybrid turbo. Not really looking for crazy hp numbers (around 300hp). What are y’all’s thoughts on a good turbo?
note here, I’ve always thought I would go s280 but I drove my buddy’s big turbo WRX and while I really liked it, it lost so much midrange power. I really like the way the fiestas stock turbo makes boost. I don’t think I’d want to lose that.

Clutch: as far as I know, the stock clutch is fine for my needs, but I’d be curious to try a lighter flywheel to get rid of some of the rev hang.

Anyone used this flywheel?

Have you used a light flywheel previously? If not, going from a dual mass to a single mass light unit generally results in a lot more noticeable NVH, especially chatter at idle and added vibrations across the rev range. The rev hang is more about the throttle programming than the flywheel.

Also, many times it changes the dynamic a bit when moving the car from a stop, requiring added revs as the light unit doesnt have the same kinetic energy store available. You get used to it.

So, both good and bad, up to you if the benefits are worth it.

I personally wont do it again for a car generally used as a street car. The last one done this way, a BMW, it sounded like rocks in a can at idle due to so chatter.

Also, doing the same thing Turbo wise. I was told many times just to get the S280, even though the boost threshold is different. Just got mine, prob going in sometime in Dec.

Everyone I chatted with on the hybrid told me its def a kick in the pants, but the same 'run out of huff' issues the stock one has, which is what I dont like about the power profile. If that profile works for you, then it might be the right move. I wanted something more linear with more top end pull based on my driving style.

Another personal preference thing.

I run a RTS Dual friction setup with a SMF that is the same weight as the OEM DMF and cant tell much of a difference in feel. I like the fact that a SMF chance of failure is almost NIL* Vs OEM DMF is multiple pieces put together to make up the sprung portion of the clutch system as the Friction disc in the OEM unit is unsprung. Food for thought* There are alot more options now for the OEM friction disc which is nice though from Whoosh. Whatever you go with will be just fine! [driving]

what he says.....at least 15,000 to 'find' the clutch pedal again. Hill starts? Holy schnikies.
