Very interesting... this is the first time I've heard the down pipe was the useless mod. I thought stock exhaust and upgraded down pipe would be the best bang for the buck, but I guess it's opposite here? Regardless I'm going to get my car tuned so help me out. I'm getting the BIG DHM IC/crash brace, Cobb Intake, RMM, Accessport/Pro Tune. I should then get upgraded IC piping and a cat-back? Will I get anything for adding the DP in there too?

I was told by Adam that a downpipe is pointless on our car. +1 horsepower on the dyno when paired with a catback. So I would so no.
I don't see how a catless DP is pointless. Let restriction better exhaust flow. To me the stock DP appears to be the largest gain (other than weight loss of swapping to another CBE system) for power as opposed to buying a CBE.

Adam has dynos to prove it. I'm just going off what he told me. He said an aftermarket downpipe on stock turbo is pointless. Only when you upgrade is it worth it. I'm personally not going big turbo so I'm personally not spending my cash on a downpipe. I'll be putting that chunk of money into Pierce handling parts.

I went into detail on how the factory system works.

If anybody has any questions, please ask away!
Why do the stage 3 tunes from Mountune/Cobb require the down pipe if it isn't a bottle neck? Is it marketing to sell their parts via a Stage system? The larger intercooler makes sense.

Only way I'll go downpipe is if I go bigger turbo. On stock turbo via adam it's pretty much pointless. Rather get new wheels with that money.

I would love to see somebody mod the stock DP for better flow as I have posted on another thread I had planned to do so but never got around to it. I bet there is some gain, it should not cost all that much and would be pretty stealthy with just some trimming of the heat shield. Couple that with a Cyborg turbo with a ported manifold and run under the radar, pass smog, etc.....very cool solution I would of done if I lived there.

RAAMaudio are you suggesting maybe emptying out the guts or...??? Im interested in trying sonething but not sure if the gain is worth it. if it doesnt pass smog i would have to buy a oem downpipe. still interested tho

Leaving the core in place and cutting some of the inlet side and adding new material to add better flow across and through it. Then cutting off part of the outlet and making it much larger and tapered to the inlet of the flex section.

Though it seems to work fairly well with the stock turbo it is a very restricted design so the mods I suggest should help but also still allow it to look stock enough with a trimmed heat shield over it to pass inspection.

Another step could also replace the flex section and outlet flange with larger bore parts to hook up to a larger exhaust for those wanting to go the extra time and or expense to do this.

I would of done these mods if I kept the stock turbo and thought of it for the Cyborg but had already went to a larger turbo by then.
