Considering DIY twin scroll manifold, equal length, hybrid design with one WG, etc....

Not sure if really needed and far more time to make a proper twin scroll with the ports for best response, last one I made took 50 hours and the cost a bundle to have one of the best welders in the country TIG it up.....I just MIG and for a proper race manifold, TIG had to be done.

Part of why looking into this is I am wondering if there is a great alternate turbo than waiting for the ATP which are pretty spendy though dang fine of course.

And, my other projects are moving along nicely so I just might be able to fit this into the schedule.

If you know what you are talking about or who does and have any good info to offer I am all ears:)

I would really like to see this project take place...what turbo did you have in mind?

I am going to just port the stock manifold for now and take my time considering the twin scroll manifold project as it is very time consuming and likely not really needed but if I get into it I will have a nice thread to update:)

I am looking at the GT25 as a great all around power curve but the GTX, which a member has been looking at as well, detuned a bit for real world use, might work out as less heat generated, very important on road race tracks.

Also the Borg Warner but I forgot the model number, seems it might work out.

Having lag is not fun, a little is OK but much more makes for a much less fun everyday experience and can also be a hassle on track, so looking very carefully for the right turbo to give a wide powerband, the least heat into the system, etc..........

Are you thinking of the BW K16? On the Audi forums there are guys running the stage 3 APR kit with the GTX turbo pushing well over 400hp. Imagine that on our lists FiSTs[:0]

I do not recall which BW, one of the members posted about it here or on another site.....the K16 sounds like too much turbo for my needs if it can make that kind of power. Big HP does not always make a car fast if it is not available where you need it the most, I know that gets repeated but it is a very important part of building a truly fast car.

For some it is fine, just not my way of doing things, if I wanted a drag racer I would of picked a different car:)

BUT, if a bigger turbo can be tuned to give a wide power band at less PSI then I would want one of course and just dial in the boost I really need.

I had 250WHP in my Matrix and it was very fast for autocross but could use a bit more on longer straights on a road course. It was a little heavier and bigger car but must less refined suspension even after I modded it than the ST. I think 275WHP would be plenty for this car when fully setup and using it the best, a bit more OK but not much more, 300WHP might be too much.

A broad power band with power when and where you need it the most is far more fun and easy to drive and on average in real use faster than big power, in most cases.

Drag racing is a different story but not much into that

I did some and posted a .007, .003, .001 and then .000 reaction times back in 2003 in the turbo matrix but always had to much wheel spin on road course tires, not enough grip in a chilly evening.

Street racing I gave up on in the 70s' when three guys in a row crashed trying to go against my 510 with half their power or less.

I always build the whole car into what I want and add the power as needed, for a streetable car I will take superb handling, brakes, feedback, reliability, lower maint costs, etc over big power only, or big power and many other parts upgraded but seldom a well sorted out package, any day:)
