COBB cracks FoRS ECU and Begins Stage 1 Tuning...

Great info in video and also tips (from Braden Berger) on how to correctly prep and dyno the RS AWD!

DynoJet / 93 Octane / 92F Ambient / 4th gear pulls

Baseline: 304whp / 340tq

Stg1 (preliminary): 319whp / 364tq

"The IC blocking plate (which COBB removes) is designed to prevent excessive cooling for vehicles in "cold" climates. In these environments LSPI can become an issue and the car will limit power to prevent pre-ignition. We recommend removing this cover for anyone living in environments that are regularly above 50F."

"We've run the car several times back-to-back and have had no reduction in power. Each time, the overboost timer was under the limit."

- Braden Berger (COBB Reverse Engineer / Lead Calibrator)

I'm confused. This is the first time I've heard about this sticker/cover on the intercooler to reduce efficiency. It cools the air too much causing condensation? So why do a lot of us run aftermarket intercoolers, that are designed to reduce intake temps as much as possible, not have these condensation problems. I run a COBB IC, the guys with the huge DHM IC's must be making buckets of condensation. What am I missing here?

Here is some more info. Another thing to remember is our little ass turbos generate a hell of a lot of heat so it might not be as big of a issue.

As for not making more power if you watch the video they say "We are calling this stage one, but its really in development." It sounds like stage one could be higher once it actually hits the streets.

How Ford 'Fixed' The Focus RS's Intercooler After Discovering That It Was Too Cool

https://www.carthrottle.com/post/ho...ooler-after-discovering-that-it-was-too-cool/

"During the Ford Focus RS launch in Valencia earlier this week, I asked Ford?s vehicle engineering manager, Tyrone Johnson, about a rather large blanking plate on the RS?s intercooler. As you?ll see in the video, the reason for the plate is to reduce the efficiency of the intercooler because Ford discovered that in particularly humid conditions, the intercooler was working too efficiently, which caused a build up of water vapour. And because water in an engine is bad news, Ford searched through its parts bin and took the same blanking plate that it used for its diesel Transit van intercoolers and placed it over the intercoolers of the Focus RSs. So you could say, then, that the RS is part super hatch, part practical van?"

Ford Focus RS Power Gains and Development

Ford Focus RS Power Gains and Development

13495150_1737262416553110_965056811895000155_n.jpg

June 30th ? Preliminary Stage 1 Power Gains

"Our engineering team learned a lot with their time on the RS in England. After more time on our dyno here at COBB they were able to come up with a safe and reliable Stage1 calibration that still offers some healthy power gains. The below will be similar to the released Stage 1 Off The Shelf map that will come on the Accessport!"

COBB Focus RS Dyno.jpg

When our baseline numbers for the Focus RS were first released, there was a lot of talk about them being inflated and even more concern surrounding the fact we dyno?d the vehicle in FWD instead of AWD mode. There?s good reason for that!

The Focus RS does not have a center differential like other AWD vehicles in its class. Instead, there is an electronically controlled clutch pack that sends a variable amount of power to the rear differential. This system is called the Rear Drive Unit or RDU. When the RDU is active (sending power to the rear wheels), it causes the rear wheels to spin faster than the front. Keep in mind that the dyno rollers are linked front and back so they spin at the same rate. With the rollers spinning at a constant rate, and the vehicle trying to spin the front and rear wheels at different rates, things don?t mesh well. When this is the case, the car actually ?thinks? it is losing traction which results in it intentionally limiting power. The best way to dyno the vehicle is in FWD mode with the RDU disconnected. Even if we were able to prevent the car from limiting power in AWD mode, the gains expressed as a percentage will be identical in either FWD or AWD mode. The actual number isn?t too relevant as it will be different with varying dynos and conditions. Check out another post on Interpreting Dyno Results for more details.

The Accessport for the RS platform will be released soon! Stay tuned for more details on the release and information on hard parts and Staged Packages to come!
