This is what Optima also says to do when trying to revive a stone dead AGM. I have successfully done this with a couple and some could not be brought back. When I worked at the local Vatozone and a customer brought in what they thought was a dead AGM we would do this and I'd say half the time we would be successful and guess what....Free AGM battery for any of us when they just would say " I just want a new one!"

Just ordered the Odyssey 96r600 Battery from Summit, expected ship date 5/14/20 and free shipping. Came out to $168 with taxes, not a bad deal!

...Now the wait...

Haha

Here's why you have to connect a regular battery to recover a dead AGM. It's from Optima's website:
The great thing about AGM batteries, including OPTIMA REDTOP® and YELLOWTOP® batteries, is that they have very low internal resistance. This allows very high amperage output so that the battery can power your accessories longer and deeper than a traditional battery, but at the same time deeply discharging it.

An AGM battery with its low internal resistance may stump car guys because sometimes it doesn't work like a traditional flooded lead-acid battery.

Here's the problem: Most battery chargers have built-in safety features that may prevent chargers from recharging deeply discharged batteries. A traditional battery that's at 10.5 volts or less is seen as defective, having either a short, a bad cell or some other defect. Most analog chargers are binary and are either on or off. If they don’t come on, it may be because the charger thinks the battery is “bad.” Turning on to charge a “bad” battery could create an unsafe scenario. But the fact is that the AGM battery may be just fine; it has simply slipped below the minimum voltage threshold of the charger to turn on, and the charger doesn't know what to do with the battery, so it does nothing.

Recovery Option #1: The Best Solution – AGM-Specific Chargers

The best method for recharging a deeply discharged AGM battery is to purchase a modern charger that has kept up with battery technology. Many chargers now have AGM-specific settings and desulfation steps that help recondition and recover deeply discharged AGM batteries.

Recovery Option #2: The DIY solution for charging a deeply discharged battery.

This is a recovery method for the do-it-yourselfer using the equipment you've got in the garage. With this option, you're going to trick your traditional charger into charging the deeply discharged AGM battery.

Hook up the good battery and deeply discharged AGM battery in parallel – positive to positive and negative to negative. Do not have the charger connected to the battery or turned on at this stage. (There's more here about how to tell if it's going to explode or when it's got a charge)

Recovery Option #3: Enlist the Professionals

If you don't own a battery charger, you don't want to make the investment, or you're not the do-it-yourself kind of person, this is the option for you.

Take the battery to a professional battery specialist who knows AGM technology.
I edited out the complete descriptions for brevity. But you can see the reason why here. If you need to perform the procedure, here's the link to the page: https://www.optimabatteries.com/en-us/support/charging/resuscitate-deeply-discharged-battery

I just ordered the Group 96R AGM battery from Advance Auto. I want the peace of mind of a battery that can't leak, that whole apparatus and fuse on the positive battery terminal looks like it could get really messed up if the battery did leak.
When I started this thread it was called an AutoCraft battery, now it's called a Diehard, because Advance Auto evidently bought the Diehard name. According to a guy I talked to at a local Advance Auto it's the same battery with the same part number, just rebranded as a Diehard.
If you sign up for email it's only $159, although you do have to take your old battery back to get your core charge refunded-

Ironically, the DieHard Platinum I had in my '00 Z28 was an Odyssey with DieHard stickers on it and a different case color than the Odyssey sold as the same battery by EnerSys.

I bought the Advance Auto Group 96R AGM battery online, and as I said above,on Advance Auto's website it's now branded a Diehard, but the one I got is still branded an Autocraft. Advance Auto says it's an identical battery, just a difference in labels. It bugged me at first because it kind of seemed like false advertising, but after checking with them they convinced me it was in fact identical so I decided not to worry about it.
The guy at the local Advance Auto where I took the old battery to get the core charge refunded said the part number is the same, and the specs appear identical. IMG_20200825_163200276.jpg

I am curious with the claim an AGM will last up to double the time of a normal battery but the warranty is exactly the same. Wonder why the don't offer a longer warranty? My OEM so far has had no issues but was looking at AGM's and see the difference is $40 higher for same capacity as normal battery but the same 3 year warranty, Hmmmmm?

To me at least, the price difference is well worth it, even if it did NOT last longer than, nor have any better warranty than a flooded lead acid battery, simply because I will NOT ever have to deal with the acid leakage (and subsequent corrosion/unibody cancer), and terminal corrosion/'fuzz' of a conventional battery. The replacement Motorcraft OEM battery which I saw online only has 500 CCA, as opposed to 590 CCA for the Advance Auto AGM battery. I strongly agree that eliminating the possibility of leaking is worth a lot, particularly with that whole apparatus on the positive battery cable which I believe includes a fuse.
The price difference would be considerably less than $20 once you factor in shipping, the Advance Auto AGM battery ships for free.
I also wanted the convenience of dealing with a place that's local, there's an Advance Auto one mile from my house, so if there is an issue with the battery I can easily switch it out there and not have to send it back somewhere.

I agree with just a $20 with discount price difference I also would buy the AGM but curious as to why the same warranty. I have never experienced any acid leakage from a car battery in over 50 years and twenty cars but I don't buy off brand batteries so who knows about that. Seems to me years ago when I bought Sears Diehards they had a longer warranty than the everyday brands but my memory is following my hair and disappearing. In reality is it more of delayed for us old folks, give us a minute and we can dredge up the info. LOL!

BTW the marketing hype is crazy on some sites for AGM. One stated if you have an auto stop/start engine the AGM battery will keep the A/C functioning when stopped! I wonder how this magic works??? I don't know of any battery powered compressors out there.

The other $160 battery is also 590 CCA but I don't think they can ship a regular battery with the acid in it already except sealed or AGM. They say no home delivery on them, ship to store only where they add the acid I'm sure. I have no problems with price just a curiosity about the same length of warranty. Never had the luxury of a battery dying under warranty. Most "leakage" on older batteries was from over filling them with water causing tray damage. Saw many "full service" gas stations in the day with the pump jockey's filling the cells with a water hose and overflowing them. Restored a '68 Old's with a rotted out battery tray. Learned from my dad to never let them even open the hood!

The leakage could also happen from long trip over-charging, and the resultant boiling over of the electrolyte out of the caps/vents as well, albeit much less likely to happen with today's modern electronic voltage/current controls.

BTW; the Odyssey 96R-600 (that's 600 CCA [wink]) is only about $170.00 SHIPPED from Summit, the Motorcraft replacement is roughly $135.00 from most online places I've checked, although I am sure that someone will post up a lower price than that with coupons/discount codes/etc.

YES, the fact that you can get warranty/pro-rated replacement from a local Advance Auto for their Die Hard AGM is a HUGE advantage over me having to ship it back to either Summit Racing, or Odyssey themselves for warranty claims, but I will take that chance given most people's great experiences with the Odyssey product.

Thanks for the link! I needed a new battery to replace the original Motorcraft in my '14 today, and fortunately the Advance Auto Parts near my home had this in stock. I was sold the Diehard version. If I don't report back, all is well.

You're welcome, mine's working fine so far, I hope yours does too.

Stock battery died yesterday. Date on battery was 02/02/2016 so it lasted 4 years 8 months and 10 days. Got an Interstate MTP-96R from Costco today. The build date says September 2020.
