Actuators, amirite?

This is mostly me just bitching.

I had to replace the blend door actuator in my 2016 FiST a few years ago. No big deal, typical Ford problem.

Recently, I hear my dashboard singing the song of its people again. Fine, I had been meaning to take it in to look at an unrelated engine noise. I make an appointment.

The next day (before the appointment), about 3 min after I shut off the car, I'm cleaning out the passenger footwell and hear about 7 seconds of loud clicking coming from under the glovebox. I update the shop and let them know we're up to three separate clicking noises.

I take it in and they diagnose a bad actuator (duh) and theorize that the engine noise is because my water pump is leaking (it is). Since the engine noise doesn't present until I've been driving an hour or so and they found a problem that might cause it, they want to fix that first. Cool. They mention they heard clicking from the passengers side twice, I assume it was the same noise I heard with the car shut off.

Diagnostics done, parts ordered, appointment made. I go to pick up my car.

I turn it on, and hear a new (to me) clicking sound coming from the passengers side. Drive to the store, and same thing happens when I leave there. I call the shop and tell them, "um, this noise is new as of today."

Apparently a second actuator chose today to die.

2016, 93k miles, and this is the third month in a row I've had to dump more than 1k into non-routine repairs. I know the timing belt/water pump were about due, and the actuators are cheap, but labor is not.

My car is just haunted. Every month, something goes wrong and it's always "car is mostly in great shape just needs $1k in repairs because this random part failed because it is a Ford and that is what Fords do"

Don't get me started on Sync.

You should really replace the actuators yourself. They are $20. The one on the passenger side (glovebox) is easy and the one on the driver side is not that hard either. Unfortunately a few years is about how long they last. This is not just a Ford problem. Many cars have used the same actuators and experience the same kinds of failure rates.

Save your money for the truly more difficult repairs like replacing the water pump.

Maybe my 2014 is one of the lucky ones. I've only had to replace the passenger actuator once in 10 yrs and that was under warranty! Sometimes, older is better!

Passenger and driver side might be "easy" but the one in the middle is not, and that's one of the ones that's out. Paying the shop to do the actuators when they do the timing belt/water pump makes way more sense than trying to do it myself, especially because I didn't know which actuator needed replacing.
