'17 Fiesta ST Metal Ticking From Engine Bay

I know our car is Direct Injected, and a large portion of noise can be attributed to that. I think I may be hearing something else that may be an issue with my car, however. It's quite audible in the car with the doors closed, and sort of sounds like some kind of metal. Hard to describe.

I figured I would post mine and hopefully get some feedback on what I'm hearing, since all the forum videos of injector noise are outside of the car, or a missing Youtube/photobucket video.

Welcome to the forum! Is this right after start up or is the engine up to temp? I dont hear anything from the video that sounds out of the norm. Sounds exactly the same as my '16 on start up. When I first got the car I thought the amount of ticking noise was unusual, but its very normal with these engines. It still gets me sometimes on cold morning start-ups, but it is normal.

Video is way to quiet. Didn't catch anything unusual in that clip that didn't sound like normal DI noise. Direct injection noise will change depending on engine operating strategy. Outside the vehicle, engine idling, I've heard the DI noise go from loud, to virtually disappear, to there again but very subtle, all over the course of a couple of seconds. Overwhelming majority of the time, as you're aware, it's just normal direct injection noise. Try de/activating the compressor at idle to remove/add load to the engine. If the noise changes with engine load, but at the same RPM, then the noise isn't "mechanical" a.k.a. lifter.

The sound begins right after startup, and continues regardless of how long the car has been on. It's more audible when stopped, or when at a constant RPM (probably just due to less engine noise).

I noticed if idle long enough in neutral, the sound goes away. However, as soon as I give it a bit of gas the sound returns immediately.

What is throwing me off is that for the first 5,000 miles or so the card did not make this noise, at least not audibly. People used to ask me if the car turned off when sitting at traffic lights.

Sorry for the audio quality, it's the best my phone can do. I found that with headphones or my phone volume at max I'm able to hear the metal ticking

I would say that the "is the car turned" off kind of quiet is very unusual. But what you've described sounds like normal DI noise.
