Why is 20psi at XXXXrpm so important?

Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Good question...I just use this as a rough benchmark to get a "feel" for spool response...that's all...

But why only use 20psi?

Since absolute peak boost values tend to vary greatly depending on the turbo and it's tune I think a better metric to gauge "spool rate" for the purpose of comparing different turbo's with tunes would be to measure how many seconds (or the shortest amount of time) it takes to go from 0psi to 20psi as a spool response benchmark...

How is wheel spin on these cars now with roughly 300lbs/300hp? I can't imagine how you are controlling this. I'm running Stage 3 E30 and putting out only 225hp /300lbs and I can't keep my tires from lighting up in 1st or second gear. Trying to take off from a stop is like watching a comedy re-run. First gear is absolutely worthless. I'm starting to wonder how you keep power to the ground on a 2,700lb front wheel drive car without having to go with sticky summers year around which for us up north, this creates a big problem. I guess you can always run a detuned map during winter... :(

Summer tires won't help you in the cold, actually just make it worse. My FoST struggled with this and finding the right tire is key. If your weather is like mine though it's tough as 40 degree one day and 70 the next. My FoST could spin 4th when temps were in the 40's on the stock GY eagles. With my Mich Xice3 though I could give it the full beans in 1st when temps were below 0F. Apart from tires, LSD, and making sure the suspension is set up there isn't too much you can do apart from a drastic redesign.

Throttle modulation is key and being able to stay on the limit of grip is where the driver comes into play. It can be hard on a turbo vehicle but practicing this will also help you as well. Instead of focusing on giving it all the power you have try focusing on keeping it safely in the grip zone, then inching closer to the limit.

The issue is not so much the HP and torque, as how it comes on. With the stock turbo it spools so fast that the power overwhelms the tires. With larger turbos, the power comes on more gradually and is held much longer so it's a lot easier to use and doesn't have as hard a time keeping rubber in contact with the ground. If you look at a dyno graph of a stock turbo it looks like a steep mountain. When you look at a larger turbo, the slope is much more gradual and the power doesn't come on like a light switch the way the stock turbo does. Look at this sample vdyno and notice the curves. I also have slightly stickier and wider than stock tires.

Exactly, which is what I was kind of referring to on the second paragraph. Ultimately up to the driver to find the limit based on TQ output of the vehicle vs grip available.

This holds true for the majority of performance vehicles.

Yeah, I also have the cyborg 39 (but using what's apparently bad 93 oct) and my wheel spin is much more controlled. I'm still on stock tires and I'm still tuning but with ~250whp and 280wtq it's very manageable. It's just all so smooth now.
How I explained it to my wife...
Stock is like if king kong gave you a pat on the back. You jump forward and you feel it but then it's right back to normal.
C39 is like if superman gave you a push but then kept flying behind you pushing the car. Not as much feeling in the beginning but much faster.

When I had the EFR turbo, 91 octane at 4700 ft elevation, 320 WHP, 287 ft lbs, lag then hit hard in the mid 4k RPM range, LSD, 225 Rival S tires on 15x9 wheels, suspension bushings, coilovers, above 60 degrees out, 1st gear was hard to use but no wheel spin at all in second gear on decent roads but lots of torque steer to deal with and a great deal of acceleration fun. The right mix of parts can yield great traction when running lots of power per weight, my car was 2575lbs then, 1st gear could of used some tuning to limit the wheel spin making it more useful but I am not into drag racing, street or track so it was not an issue worth bothering with for my particular setup and use of the car.

The C39 is going to make your car much faster than most are expecting in far more situations than a Donkey kick stock turbo or a lag prone bigger turbo, I am very glad for all involved to be able to get one of these as a damn fine performance upgrade for the money, the best by far and more so that get to run E30, Meth, etc:)

Great job with this Bryan. Really impressive results so far...can't wait to see what others are making as they get installed/tuned.

So what's this thing sound like? One major thing that has me wanting to jump ship is the annoying alarm / whistling sound the X-37 makes under light boost.

Honestly, it prob sounds the same lol. Sorry. Lol.
DHM is installing one this weekend and tuning it on the dyno next week on E30. Exciting times :)

Not sure if I did PM you or not, But you know there is a pretty reasonable upgrade path for the X37 to cyborg39, right? We have done 3 already :)

It's the pricing on the first page. The price will go up after these last 2 are sold :)

Upgrading to the c39 spec will really yield better numbers on pump?

Should make the same amount of power on less boost. Less boost = less octane needed for XXX power.

PM me if your interested. We upgrade them for a pretty reasonable price :)
