This has probably been answered in this thread but that's a lot of pages to go through. So I'd just like to ask how many people installed this themselves? I've never done a turbo swap on a car but I'll be damned if I'm paying anyone to do this for me for more than the price of the turbo itself. I have access to a lift but I have to install in one day. So I was wondering how long it took to change and how hard the removal and replacement is? Any little tips to make this go faster? I'll be doing all the work myself and with the help of my wife.
If you have the heat shields off, and the right tools, no more than 4-6 hours. Remove intake, battery, battery tray, and cowl. Tool list I use for turbo:
1/4" ratchet
3/4" ratchet
Breaker bar
13mm deep socket (1/4" and 3/4") = exhaust manifold (9x)
5/8" socket = water banjo bolts (2x)
Assorted torx bits and star sockets (E7 star, not necessary, but useful)
Various extensions
6mm socket = stock intake clamps
8mm (or 10mm) socket = Oil Feed
1/4" wrench and T25 (?) = Oil Return
Big bucket to catch coolant
Kitty litter
I can't recall what the stock downpipe bolt size is or the heat shields.
Anyway, once the downpipe is undone, and coolant lines are off and drained, get the manifold bolts off. Once the manifold and turbo are free, rotate the passenger side down, and you can pull the whole thing out the top. I believe that's everything.
