From memory cant imagine a cone filter fitting in there
Cobb uses a fairly narrow cone filter....at least shown here in this video below (@~ :47s)...I was told (FWIW) it uses the stock airbox...guess we'll see soon enough...

If I can chime in a tad - Cobb did respond to a question of mine reference the turbo noises that their intake would make due to its design. They were very sure to verify that it did in fact still make very audible noise, but perhaps a bit more muffled as compared to open, in engine bay, short ram intake of similar design.

In all actuality, the stock bottom box is pretty roomy. Enough to fit a conical filter of some sort. I guess we will see for sure when Cobb releases it.

Hey guys, I'm looking to buy a mod that will increase the whoosh sound coming off of the turbo, but I really don't care much for performance gains. I also want to maintain my extended warranty so I was thinking about going with a drop in filter, so I was hoping to get some feedback on those with JUST a drop in filter (cobb, mountune, or K&N). Is there an audible increase in engine noise? Particularly that awesome whoosh sound that we all love? Or is it not worth the price? Which of those 3 brands (cobb, mountune, or K&N) do you recommend? Thank!

Pick up the boomba bov adapter if you're just looking for the sound.
I am considering that, but I feel like the bov is TOO loud. Seems obnoxious to me if I'm going to be making that loud hissing sound all the time. Don't want to be drawing attention to myself in parking lots. Just want to get that nice sound whenever I step on the gas hard

That's the problem with our electronic bypass valve. It actuates at the slightest lift of the throttle.

If it was vacuum actuated it wouldn't make noise at low boost levels.

I have the COBB stage 1 (Accessport +Drop-in green filter). It honestly hardly makes any noise at all. I can hear it a bit sometimes when I let off the throttle, but when the music is on I can't hear it at all. If you want the noise, I personally wouldn't recommend the drop-in filter route. Just my 2 cents.

Thanks for the honesty! This is what I was looking for. Anyone have any experience with the BOV's? From the videos I've seen, they seem to make the loud noise whenever you shift gears.

Yes but you will get the same noise from an Injen intake too

I wont be doing the BOV thing but will be upgrading the diverter valve with a forge one
Because i dont vent to atmosphere

Thanks, I'm guessing designs like the injen and FSWERKS intakes will all produce considerably louder whooshes. What's your opinion on the power loss due to the WAI design? I've read that there is a decrease in power when idle or before taking off. Will it be noticeable?

WAI?? o_O

I dunno, I felt like the car was much snappier and more responsive with the Injen intake in it, I have a drop in panel filter and a modded OEM airbox at the moment (I was expecting to need to demonstrate how to install the COBB cold air intake.) and the response is notably slower, modding the airbox helped but the blow off valve noise is no longer super loud like it was with the Injen type of intake.

Intake air temps do get higher with the injen; but overall it's a lot of fun for the money and you will feel it in the seat of your pants. it's not millions of horsepower or anything earth shattering, just response is faster, you can hear the turbo much MUCH more and get the cool BOV noise you want, which is the main thing here for the purpose of this discussion - you wanted that BOV noise - with the added benefit of slightly more power. You might find your mileage will go down because the fun boosty noises will lead you to drive with a much heavier foot x_X

I keep wondering when we're going to see the Cobb Fiesta ST intake and SEMA is NEXT MONTH so um yeah I am not convinced we'll see an intake get released before SEMA. And you have the EcoBoost mustang coming which draws more focus from us, but at the same time it does also bring more aftermarket attention to the ecoboost family of motors.

If you follow Mishimoto's blog they're already analyzing the hell out of the thing and looking for weak points and many of them are shared with our cars

Like the OEM FMIC being a piece of crap

People are saying the oem intercooler is actually nice. And I doubt will see the intake before then unfortunately.

The OEM intercooler does a great job when cruising down the highway at a steady speed. ;)

I have not been totally sold on any of the intakes yet, so I modified my lower air box using a velocity stack off of a Kawasaki motorcycle. It smooths the air flow coming in and out of the air box more than just a hole drilled in the side. I did gain a little additional intake and bypass valve noise along with what feels like slightly better response. It was very minor and could be more of my imagination than anything else. I have thought about cutting the entire lower half of the airbox off and sealing with an aluminum plate with a duct going to the upper grille. It would much like the Mountune intake, but keep the complex geometry of the plastic OEM airbox instead of making it out of fabricated aluminum.

Here is my single velocity stack intake modification;

Well that's mostly what I do, with maybe a few aggressive accelerations throughout the week. Ha. That's why I'm in no hurry to upgrade the intercooler. Rather get an exhaust, intake, and/or new wheels and tires.

And you aren't going to wait for Cobb's either?

Not sure what I will do. I am already looking at the Mountune induction tube out of the stock airbox and wrapping the remaining tube section in gold heat resistant foil. Once I invest in all of that, it makes no sense to replace it with an aluminum tube section. I would probably go with the Mountune intake and call it good. I also like the idea of being able to drop in the stock filter for the winter when there is a massive amount of dust on the roads on dry days from salt and the other di-icing agents. That fine dust gets into everything and I could use the extra filtering of the stock filter from December to March.

I do have one remaining tall velocity stack left over that I might try and add to the factory lower airbox and run a hose to the upper grille. The hard part is finding a good place to route it. There is always something in the way of where I want to run the hose.

My main focus for the intake is now to wrap gold foil over the factory tubes. The cooler I can keep the intake air, the less the intercooler needs to work. Next will be sealing the intercooler to the bumper to make sure all the air passes thru the intercooler. Now that I have the Accessport, I can play around with watching temps and can block off the velocity stack to see if it makes any difference in air temp.

Anyone know if cp-e is currently developing an intake for the FiST similar to the FoST (below)??
