Mod: CFM Baffled Billet Valve Cover Breather - Wrinkle Black

When initially researching the Fiesta ST and DI Turbo engines in general, one of the first "problems" I came across amongst many different manufacturers is the lack of fuel "washing" the intake valves causing excessive carbon build up. Which after some time and miles and cause drivability and other issues. From the get go I wanted to do what I could to prevent (or help) this. I learned quickly that a properly setup oil catch can setup can help minimize the problem. Until recently, I hadn't heard about valve cover breathers. Thanks to BoostBumps and a few other members they discovered that this part originally made for the FoST does indeed fit our cars. It makes a lot of sense to me that reducing valve cover pressure will help minimize oil getting back into the intake track. As this is my first DI car, don't take any of this info to heart as there could likely be misinformation. Still trying to research and learn about this common issue and what I can do, so I don't have to walnut blast the valves at 30k

Any issues running this? Like leaks? You don't have an Oil Catch can paired with this mod correct?

Thought you might be interested in my CFM update as an FYI:

I have yet to see any issues with CFM's Baffled Breather Cap installed which also has a built in check valve to prevent leaks from occurring during vacuum conditions...I currently now have the CFM breather cap installed along with an OCC and have verified that "Vacuum", "AFR", "STFT" (Short Term Fuel Trims) still remain stable and unchanged....I also recently ran a few good 24~25psi WOT pulls and again actively monitored fuel trims which still remained stable and immediately afterwards visually inspected and saw no signs of oil seep or splash on the top surface of the breather cap baffle...In speaking directly with CFM recently they still strongly recommend also having an OCC installed along with their breather cap and not delete or cap off any other breather lines as this breather cap should not be used as the only source for venting...This breather cap should help to improve the overall the efficiency of the ventilation system and in theory reduce (by not entirely eliminate) the amount of blow-by being recirculated (via the PCV line) back into through the Intake Manifold....

Thanks Tom and Boost Bumps for the response. I was mainly interested in running it without the OCC. I don't think I can undertake a mod with that scale. It sounds like you're doing fine without the complete setup.

You got it! I checked it again today and the top of the check valve is still bone dry after around 200 miles and plenty of full boost pulls.

I'm kind of in the same boat as doubletap. I personally would prefer a plug and play kit that includes all neccesary plumbing, bracketry, clamps, adapters etc...There are a lot of super clean setups in the OCC thread, but all require some amount of custom work and sourcing of parts to make it all work together as planned. I don't have enough confidence in my knowledge and skills to attempt that kind of custom job...yet. I want it done correctly and have it work effectively.

Lived in the Bay Area (same cities you mentioned) for about 12 years and then moved further north to the Sacramento area.

I'm not sure about legality or warranty issues with the Valve Cover Breather, but I do know it can be uninstalled and put back to stock within literally 30 seconds.

I don't know if any FiST valves have been scoped yet, but other Ford models have definitely shown to have the problem. I know Boomba said they had a peak at their intake valves around 8k on their Focus and there was already quite a bit of build up.

Have you had any problems with the filter coming off of the check valve on your CFM Breather? Mine came in, and it doesn't seem to take a lot of strength to pull it apart. Was considering getting a hose clamp for it.

I have had zero issues running it as it came. CFM actually recommends running it without a hose clamp.

I ended up taking off the fog light surround to get better access to the light which made life MUCH easier.

Is it easy to get the fog light surround off? I want to paint mine gloss black. How do I go about taking them out??

It's not bad. If you have plastic panel removal tools it makes life a lot easier. Once you get one of the clips you can see where the other clips are at. Make sure you use a paint that promotes flex as the plastic is quite pliable.
