We didn't see a ton of them there---the Ford Booth had two---they played a nice video on screen of Von-Gittin sliding around in one---pretty diverse show this year actually---everyone/manufacturer seemed well represented---lot's of retro stuff-pro touring as well...here's a couple pics of some random stuff---we had quite a few cars out there---the SUBE at the Borg Warner booth got lot's of attention-we did the cage in it and they painted it gold! Shot's of a crossmember for a Hyundai that we're thinking about making for our cars---figure out a front tow hook finally!

Hi Jim, I got my bar today all the way down under :) Nicely done. Thanks.

It's already fitted without too much issue. Thanks Dave for the guide.

One thing does anyone know how much torque to put on the A arm bolts? I took a stab at 110ft/lbs (or about as hard as I could muster in the tight space).
Coming out they seemed super tight. I noticed coming out the bolts had blue thread locker applied. Are other guys re-applying more of this?

Stage 2: 180?

So I think you got enough.


180 Nm actually comes out to about 132 ft/lbs.
I am not sure what they mean by 180? however.

That means it's a torque-to-yield (TTY) bolt, which is generally applicable to almost all suspension hardware. After reaching the torque it gets another 180 degree (assuming that's the '?' in your past) turn to stretch the bolt. In a perfect world this type of torqued hardware is supposed to be replaced every time it is removed.

Edit: If the '?' is supposed to be nm then that is just a final torque.

I would double-check other similar bolts/locations to see, but I would imagine it to be a 180 degree turn past the initial torque.

And quite honestly, I don't really care what others do with their hardware because it's not my vehicle. Considering the stresses I usually put on my suspensions due to slamming/stancing I always replace hardware. It's just cheap insurance imho. I know that not everyone else feels that way or understands the metallurgy, but it's not my place to judge them. Just relaying the info.

Ymmv.

I'd say 110ft lbs + blue lock-tight is pretty dang tight, I wouldn't lose sleep over it.

On the other hand, if the spec is around 135lbs + some, and you didn't put any lock-tight on it, I'd drive it a couple days, then add lock-tight to the threads and re-torque it.

As I have not installed my 6pt brace, does anyone know the part numbers for the two lower a arm bolts. Also, anyone confirm that these are true torque to yield bolts? The center portion of the length of a TTY bold is usually a smaller diameter than the ends, in order to control bolt stretch. These sound like they are torque turn to tighten (TTT) fasteners, which are typically 10.9 grade fasteners which yield in the threads, not in the body. A 180 deg. turn is a lot of load, typically only 90 deg. second turn is used. I think I'll replace mine.

TTY and TTT fasteners are typically fasteners that are subject to either bolt loosening (head bolts) or to fatigue loading. Especially for suspensions, a more accurate method of bolt stretch is required to reduce suseptability to fatigue. Most bolts have 5 - 6 stretch cycles in them, so for the most part, these fasteners can be reused. However, failure of this particular fastener would be problematic, so I think replacement is a prudent choice.

Guys I'd be surprised if it was TTY---it hasn't been on any of the other vehicles we've worked on over the last 20 years---I'll tell you we've had our a-arm bolts in and out more than a 60 times and have noticed nothing unusual/thread galling or bolt stretch...

I have never had any problem with these bolts as well.
However as per the manual there are TTY.

FYI to all, I had a VERY similar lower front bar on my `91 Escort GT autocrosser way back in the early 1990s through ~2007 when I finally sold the car. I can't remember the "brand/vendor" name for sure, but Jim Pierce was likely the fabricator even back then. His suspension/chassis bolt-on braces are well established parts that produce the intended/desired results. Seriously, can't say enough good things about Jim, his work, and products.

I'll be upgrading to the 6 point bar! Can you compensate for the bigger COBB Charge Pipes with the 6 point? My 2 point bar bent my pipe a bit.

Yes sir-all the bars now clear the COBB pipe---we moved the bends out board and made them sharper---ground clearance got better by an 1/8" and got quite a bit of clearance now all around...just had to scrap 6" more tubing which get's recycled into cups!

Piercemotorsports, are your bars now coming with stickers instead of welded on company logo tags? if so, can you guys build a 6 point without the tag and place a sticker with your company logo instead? I prefer the sticker over the welded tag.

Great question---It's Jim by the way! The 2 points come with stickers and typically the 4/6 points come with the higher end Laser cut logo's, but at this stage of the game it's still "burger king", you can have it anyway you like! Just leave me a note in the checkout/notes section with paypal or PM me here and we'll make sure you get the sticker-thanks so much!
