Which intake? Injen, FSWERKS, or Cobb

I prefer the mountune.
It draws additional cool air from outside the engine compartment.
You can use the OE filter for daily driving or a performance drop in for better flow.
100% emissions legal and will not effect the Ford warranty.

Dave
I agree with the mountune as the best option. I actually have it on order and will be selling my Injen after I install it. I do, however, think that the Injen is good quality and works great.

So a drop in filter is better than a whole intake system?

I have Cobb's high flow filter and was planning on getting their intake.

Yes. 2JR proved on a dyno that the stock box with a drop-in filter had the coolest intake temps after repeated runs. If you're looking for function, this is your best bet right now. Do the full intakes look/sound cool? Yeah, but they aren't as effective

Wow. I didn't know that. That's great. Save me some money then. The drop in filter does have a little psshhh to it as well. Not as much as an intake of course but enough to hear.

Wow great to know! Forget the intake then I guess

That's a little misleading as to how he tested it as it wasn't an apples-to-apples comparsion, but rather a raw demonstration of principle - and the way Joe did it didn't use a heat shield around the intake - just demonstrating a tube+cone only sort of system. He did get one thing right though: A sealed airbox intake system will perform the best, the most consistently.

After consecutive passes, a short ram intake without any sort of heat shielding is definitely going to make less power - and lose power with each pass. A heat shield can mitigate this problem slightly.

In terms of raw performance, I am betting the Cobb system will ultimately be the most efficient, unless aFe Power, Takeda or Greddy roll out a system for our application. This is because of the combination of a streamlined intake tube with a sealed airbox. Likewise, the full Mountune induction setup with airbox and hoses will also perform similarly well. If there were a way to do the Injen tube with my stock airbox I would've done that.

FSWerks and Injen both could use a better heatshield design but need only minor finessing to be what I would call "perfect", and both need the same type of tweak to prevent the system from drawing in hot air.

It's aesthetic preference at that point whether you preferred Cobb or Mountune's style of intake, or modify the FSWerks or Injen intake to better insulate the filter from hot air.

I think there is a bit of power to be gained in streamlining the air-cleaner-to-turbo intake section, beyond the simple filter. This is why I really like the Cobb setup, but I wouldn't hold my breath either - I will be surprised if we see it get released before SEMA 2014 at this rate.

I definitely agree that the Cobb MAY be a better system. As you said, due to the streamlined tubing and closed box, but it isnt out yet. I was referencing those systems that are out and have been shown to not be as consistent as the closed box with drop-in filter

Stock box, Drop in, Trim the bottom of the box and you have the perfect intake.

I've ordered a Mountune style intake hose and a MAF adapter from England. My plan is to build my own intake and I can weigh the pros and cons of both the stock and open element style systems myself. Should be fun.

No - I think the perfect setup would be something like an Injen mated to the OEM upper airbox + drop in filter + cut 2" round hole in bottom most section of lower airbox, install 2" hose coupler, duct hose to dry area inside bumper fascia to draw cool air ahead of the radiator. Open up driver's side-facing wall of lower airbox (the side that faces the back of the headlight, AWAY from the engine bay), cut 2x1 hole in side for added boosty noises and additional draw capacity. THAT would be perfect.

A lot of people are getting the idea to cut like HALF the lower airbox off which is WAY too much

Sure that would be better but damn alot of work. Does the this little turbine really need that much flow? The way you explained the trimming is about how i have mine lol. I trimmed the bottom most section of the box with a 2'' square farthest away from the rad/engine. You are certainly correct about most people hacking off half the box lol.

Actually the way I did it wasn't much work at all (for lower airbox mods) and I did it using stuff I had lying around (aside from filter)... if MBRP does a intake pipe like they've done for the focus st for our application we could do that. Or you could just cut the Injen intake tube at the end and stick a Spectre silicon coupler in there to couple it to the OEM upper airbox lid. Totally doable.

Now about whether the car does need both holes in the lower airbox - yes. When I just had the 2" hole in the bottom the car felt better than stock but less responsive than w/Injen, but after opening up the side of the airbox a bit more that resolved the "congested" feel I got.

I also feel like we'll probably pick up 7-10hp on chargepipes too

I like the spectre coupler idea. I really am curious to know just how restrictive if any the factory intake pipe is....Also charge pipes may hurt more then help depending on the size. From what I see it doesnt look to bad and numerous sites say that the charge pipes from the factory are more then adequate for the stock turbo.

Per ATP.

You're forgetting about the resonator donut. That little turd is eating 7-13hp... and ATP later changed their tune about that too because IIRC they're developing chargepipes afterall.

Do we have a definitive answer on that the donut actually does? I've seen some say it's for sound, others say it's for trapping oil...

I called them. They still say if your running a factory turbo the stock piping is more then adequate.

Do we know or have any idea if the Cobb intake is going to be more similar to Mountune's version or Injen/Fswerks style of intake? I'm now leaning to spending a little bit more and grabbing the mountune system.

A hybrid of the two styles based on what we know about the prototype systems seen on The Smoking Tire's car and IanAtCobb's Instagram pages.

As stated previously we know Cobb will be a Injen/FSWerks style hardpipe mated to the OEM lower airbox for a sealed-airbox type of system similar to Mountune. I would say those two should end up being fairly close in performance.
