Any and all additives of any type, origin or chemical makeup. They are very sensitive to fuel oxygen levels, burn rate, pattern and specific gravity.
Is that with just with tunes or even stock tune? Ford recommended an intake valve cleaner when I hit 20k miles and also recommended techtron to prevent buildup on DI engines.

Understood about running 91 or better Octane fuel, but the questions still remain:
1. How can you be sure that the Octane you're running is the stated Octane at the gas pump; especially now that we are running a more aggressive Tune compared to stock?

2. How do you go about in maintaining the 91 or better value?

All of you should be running 91 or better. This will help to fight buildup as it has a more complete burn VS 87. To keep everything clean you can add a splash of MS109 or c85 periodically.

Only purchase fuel from large, busy and reputable stations. Also, you can count on the octane rating as it is HEAVILY monitored by the government.
 


I installed my LMS tuner Friday morning with just a minor hiccup. The tech staff walked me thru and the install took seconds. Despite 93 degree temps and high humidity, a noticeable bump in HP and torque was evident. Numbers? No clue, but 80 came quickly (on a limited access, major east-west PA roadway) and acceleration in 10 MPH increments in 6th was awesome (just getting a feel for things). Around town, you'd never know anything was different (unless called upon), but I'm sure I'll never experience improved gas mileage - too much happy right foot!!

I have used nothing but 93 octane fuel since new....I always get it at shell...their "vpower" 93 is all that's been used since I tuned at 2800 miles (6500 now) I did fill up at Marathon once pre tune....that's also a big name fuel station. I even had the dealer where I bought the car fill it up with 93...it had 50 miles on it when I picked it up and unless it had 87 in it before the dealer filled it with 93 (which is a good possibility) then its never saw anything other then 93 and it will never see anything lower than that. I'm very anal about that...even when 87 was an "option" i wasn't ever using it...now that I'm tuned I'm even more picky. I use nothing but shell 93 and I even almost always use the same pump...since it runs great and I've had no issues if its not broke don't fix it :)

Same here. I always used Shell's V-Power 92 at a particular station w/o problem, but since we can only get 92, and nothing higher, I wondered if I could get 93 by increasing octane with either Torco or ETOH for those times that I want to experience the 93 Tune. 100 Octane race gas is sold at a Union 76 station, but the quality is not consistent, and hella expensive at $18/gallon [8]!

Guess, LMS does not recommend ETOH or Torco for the EB platform, as they said that there's more than a few blown up Fords running ETOH mixture in their experience (via PM).....interesting. Had no problem running ETOH or Torco on the TTS or GTI [dunno]...go figure.

Interesting...in my case, where I reside, when I used Chevron or Union 76 on the TTS, it was pulling timing in the upper rpm, but when I used Shell it was adding timing and pulled harder.

Don't know about other tuners . But Randy said Shell performed poorly according to data logs.

That's why we use datalogs not seat of the pants for changing parameters. I felt no difference either . It would probably come up in a search.

Blanket statements about fuel, like this one, are completely worthless. The absolute only way you'll know what fuel is best in your area and your convenience is by datalogging. No one that lives hundreds or thousands of miles away can possibly know the quality of fuel at your local station. My local Shell in NC had better 87 octane than any of the 92 octane stations that are convenient to me in OR.

This is true. We both know Oregon gas sucks. How is Washington gas? I'll occasionally go to a Chevron in Vancouver because I want to pump my own gas.

It's not noticeably better or worse. The fuel in the PNW just sucks as a general statement.
Having a tune burble pop really bad for the engine? Any solid proof of this?
If it was bad then I'm sure Ford wouldn't have it as part of their OEM calibration.

I hear this so often -- some variation of "If (Insert Manufacturer) engineers designed the vehicle this way, it must be the right thing to do." Should you always have blind faith?

On a side note, an interesting video about the RS -- 'Pops and burbles' are mentioned several times in this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Oz-ApdYRNGE

Raj Nair, Group Vice President on the Product Development team for the RS, complained there were not enough 'pops and burbles' and would not sign off on the final version of the RS. You can hear him saying "The engine guys, you know said you're burning too much fuel but I got my pops and burbles."

So Livernois is wrong for saying it can damage DI engines?
