Bearing separators tear up the shims. Are these carriers shimmed the same way a non-3rd-member style trans is? Like an 8.8 or dana ?

I've never had a trans axle apart.... Transfer cases, rearends, but never a manual trans or transaxle. But i've rebuilt everything else fine, so.... "Ant skerd".
These cant be shimmed to change where the gear rides like a typical rear end. But you do shim to get the correct preload on the bearings too much and it wears more too loose and it is noisy from what I have read ..

I setup up my 8.8, dana 35, dana d30, and dana 30 hight pinion. I'd much rather be setting up yoda or ford 9" style axles with screw type deals to set the back-lash.

Yes the shim and you only need one the correct size go between the case and the outer race of the bearing. measuring and installing it are about the most time consuming part of the whole deal ..

Has anyone in Canada (or US) tried to have a Ford dealer install a Mountune-sourced LSD when you purchased your ST? Any conversation with a dealer about warranty coverage (esp. given their installing)?

How much should I expect to pay a dealer for the installation?

I'm not capable of taking this on myself... not sure how confident in a dealer's tech doing the work either, but if they warrant the work...

I wouldn't trust a dealership to change my trans oil, let alone install a LSD that they will deny responsibility for if it has issues ( no matter what they tell you up front ).

Be very careful, do some research, find out if they have a tech that actually knows what to do and cares to do it right instead of just slamming out the job to make the money(not sure how paid there), at anyplace you go. There are crappy mechanics and shops all over the US, few I would consider touching my vehicles, likely many issues like that up there as well.

Knowing me, I would start and then my dad would have to help me the rest of the way so I don't kill myself doing it. I don't trust mechanics here except for one dealer. And that's only for oil changes and standard maintenance.

Well my dealer messed up an oil change lol. Over filled it by at least 1/2 liter.
The less time this car spends there the better I think.
I'll continue to go to dealer for routine maint (might find another one) but if it came to a skilled job beyond their normal scope I'd look elsewhere.
When you check your car in there do you honestly have a clue who's working on it?
You're better off travelling as far as it takes to find a professional imo.

Wow, I just posted my experience on another forum.

For me, the install is endless as Mountune has the Quaifes, but they don't have the install kits as the bolts are backordered from Ford with no idea of when they might be available. So I've had a thousand dollar paperweight sitting on my desk for a few months, with no end in sight.

I really wish they'd told me this before I bought, but I remain waiting, more or less patiently, with the hope (based on pure fantasy right now) of getting this in before July 4th.

Then, again, they're English.

Which bolts are you needing ? Ring gear bolts ?

Whats included in the install kits? I just littlerally recieved my 3J Driveline LSD today but no kits and what even worse right now, no one to install.

How lomg should the install take. The manufacuturer says 4.56 hours, I went to a local transmission place for shits and giggles and they told me anywhere from 10-15 hours.

Mine took two days to do myself as getting the trans out and back in was the most time consuming part for me working without a lift. But once the Trans is out it isn't too hard to install if you are using new bearings and fresh bolts you can have that all ready ahead of time and a new axle seal as you will need one at least as you have to take the seal out to measure and set the preload shim and they don't like that all too much.

Jumping in here late, but I had some great luck in that there is a dealer in our area with a quality Ford tech. The dealership is Bickford in Snohomish. The tech is "Buff." it cost me $1800 to get it done. I dropped if off on a Monday. I got it back on Wednesday. It ran like a charm at its first track day a couple weeks later. You never know how these things will go over time, but I'm hopeful. So many things could wrong, but so far so good. I would never have put this in the hands of the shop where I purchased the car originally. They freaked out a little bit about doing the MP215 and FMIC install under the Mountune warranty coverage. They did fine, but when someone gets THAT nervous about an intake assembly, well, Quaife? Maybe not.

The shop that does all my other work/installs had the car for a little while in February then decided they could not do it and referred me to a local racing transmission specialist. Instead, Buff at Bickford did it for about $700 less than my regular race shop bid on it.

I would never have anyone other than an experienced shop do this, or really any major work on my car. I gave up on the Ford dealer when they couldn't change tires without damaging the wheels and severely over-torquing the lug nuts. Fortunately there is a local shop with really good mechanics/techs who are well paid and take pride in their work. I'm willing to pay a little extra for quality work.

They also just remodeled for the "open kitchen" look, where there is a large window from the waiting room to the back so you can see the work being done and how clean and well organized the eight bays are.

OK Ford sells these bolts as a weird pack I think like six to a pack and they don't break up a pack at least that is what I was told way back when..
Here is the part number and what the bolt looks like W700427-S300. The seals and bearings are listed further back in this thread But here is what will work as I used in mine as I had no kit either..
Just help from Steve at Tasca and some buying parts to see if they fit.. as Ford used lots of off the shelf parts to make this car..

SO THIS SHOULD BE THAT PARTS OF THE KIT YOU NEEED You may or may not need shims to set the preload but I found mine to need the exact same size shim as was in it from the factory.. but your shop qill know more on that.. Hope this helps sourcing parts..

FYI
Case bolts are

Torque :
Stage 1: 18 Nm
Stage 2: 90 degree

Tq to stg one then tq 90 degrees past that moving the tq wrench in a circle make it 1/4 turn more of a turn after stage one tq is set.


Also the ring gear on the Diff is
Tighten each bolt 1 turn at a time.
Torque :
Stage 1: 50 Nm
Stage 2: 90 degree

Thanks so much for your help. I've decided to chill out for a day (the moon seems to be in F/YOU) as all kinds of things are running amok. I'll try TASCA for the bolts; Mountune has the bearings and seals; and Ben Ashton at Quaife in the U.K. gave me the contact info for a supplier there, Burton Performance Centre.

So, on the one hand I'm really frustrated with Mountune for not being able to provide the install kits they show on their site; and, on the other, I'm sure Mountune is frustrated with Ford for not making the parts available. It will all work out.

Classic 'First World" problem.

Thanks, again, for your help!

And I'll follow up with information as I get it.
