Blown Engine Resource Thread

Bump on this older thread. I haven't had a failure yet, but wanted to know some opinions from people with more engine knowledge than myself

My car is a 2013, with coolant recall and Mountune rad. Stock turbo, basic bolt ons and at ~50k miles. It is used both on track and road. It has a custom tune by a well respected Ford specialist called "Sabre" here in the UK (242hp/294lb ft Dyno).

The car has run perfectly, but the last service by a Ford approved specialist pointed out they had found a chunk of metal on the sump plug. It wasn't a magnetic sump plug, but it seemed to be stuck to it. The chunk was about half the size of a small finger nail. Apparently there was no other evidence of metal in the oil.

The service tech didn't really know what to suggest it may be, other than a piece of ring.

Since then, the car did one track day flawlessly and has been put away for winter. There were no error codes or issues with the way it drove, but it's kind of got stuck in my mind.

I haven't seen many failures here on stock turbo, but could you really lose a chunk of metal off the ring and have no issues whatsoever? Any other suggestions as to what it may be? I do have a baffled sump, but the metal he showed me looked like it has been chewed up and was round, not anything like the sump insert.

Get your oil analysed. There are firms who will tell you what metals are in it and in what quantity.
I'll do that next time I dump the oil, will probably be next year though as the car is in storage for winter.

I suppose I was just looking for some ideas of what it may be, but that's probably impossible to tell.

I think I was surprised that I could find a chunk of metal and then have it survive a track day no problem.
