I guess this subject's been discussed many times before on the forum, but being new here and not being a tech wiz, I'm interested to know what my best options are for the Fiesta ST. From what I can gather a hybrid is better than a normal turbo? If I'm right, what are the best ones out there and why? Also, why are they called hybrids? Is it maybe a cross between a normal turbo and a race turbo?

A hybrid is a Stock frame Turbo that is then Machined out to accept a larger compressor and Turbine wheel....Hence the Hybrid term. Combining the Two to make one*

Ahh, I seee, I think.... So, is it just a modification of your original turbo rather than a completely new performance turbo? I've heard about replacing the original factory turbo with BIG turbos, and this doesn't sound like one, just a mod?

Hybrids got explained above . The question of who makes the best one is whole other ball of wax so to speak. I mean here in the states the Whoosh Hybrid is well accepted now. Prior to that it would have been a Pumaspeed x37 or x47. Now in the UK you also had the Revo s242 which was considered to be an excellent one as well. There is debate about the RT330 as it seemed to have issues.
Though you have a few other offerings over there that we do not have here like the AET hybrid. I have whats considered to be a big Turbo the TurboTechnics s280 it again is a UK company but is becoming very well received on both sides of the ocean.

What are your goals? Monster top-end power? Near stock drivability? Minimal supporting mods?

You ask about hybrids, therefore im going to assume you want a factory style turbo. Whoosh has two hybrids that will bolt up like stock but offer near 300hp with supporting mods.

Puma just released new turbos 2.0 x47s/57s that are very popular.

What are you trying to accomplish?

The X57 is not that popular and is actually a poor performer. IMO.

I'm looking at getting what Pumaspeed "claim" to offer (without actually using them due to their reputation), between 300 and 380bhp without serious loss of reliability and economy. I'd be happy getting what I used to get in mpg from my FoST. I'm not too bothered about the car becoming a bit of a beast handling and performance wise because I used to ride high performance motorcycles.

Whats wrong with the X57/X58 I can BARELY find information on it other than a small handful of posts. I saw it had machining errors in the coolant lines but I was under the impression it was fixed - atleast that is what MonsterTuned said?

Been looking at the RT330 and especially the S280. I hear that Revo have a good rep, but the S280 has the claimed better performance. Dpro likes them, but how does everyone else rate TurboTechnics as a company?

I would then look into the S280 options, IF you have no concerns/worries about it NOT appearing stock/factory for your MOT inspections (if you have those where you live?). [wink]

For MOTs in the UK the law is less concerned about performance and more concerned about if everything works properly (tires, indicators, headlights etc.). It's the insurance companies that are concerned about you becoming a Chuck Yeager on the road. Ah, I've just remembered one performance part MOTs are concerned about, the exhaust, but that's mainly regarding noise.

Ah, I've just had a chat with a family member and I've been told that they're also concerned with emissions. I guess that changes things a bit...I know my local where I take my car bend the rules a bit for regulars, like sticking standard number plates over custom number plates for the MOT and overlooking my Mountune job I had on my old FoST (something that REALLY stood out), but I'm not so sure about a huge turbo. So then, does the S280 look drastically different from the original?

I would probably take into consideration parts that have good support where you live and maybe seek out a reputable company that offers that. I get the sense Peron is a pretty solid company in england. seems like their gtx2860r kit is pretty well priced, although the hybrid and s280 seem more affordable. hopefully you have aftermarket companies who have your back with those options.

No it is a different Turbo cartridge but in the stock Turbo frame. Whoosh makes one of the better Hybrid turbo stateside also...with stateside help ...unlike Pumaspeed. I roll BT Gen2 GTX2860R and now going to A DHM360R setup...basically the same Turbo but with a different exhaust housing and nicely welded custom manifold.

Lots of great info! I've got a lot more info than I came in with, and have some really good suggestions for turbos. (y) There's a garage on the other side of town who specialises in mapping, and I'll see him about the best steps to take and the ideal turbo to go for out the three mentioned here when the time comes. :)

I don't know what visual inspections you have for emissions tests. If your visuals are strict, I'd get a Whoosh hybrid, since externally, you can't tell the difference from a stock turbo. If visuals aren't that strict, I'd go S280 turbo. The S280 has stockish torque but more HP potential than a hybrid.

I know that if you reach the limits of the turbo with regular fuel, you don't have the luxury of ethanol fuels to blend and get E30-E45. I had the S242 on my Fiesta and with 91 octane pump fuel, I got 292 BHP. Going to E40, it went to 322 BHP.

I know that if you reach the AFR limits of your stock fuel system and want a little more HP, you can go aux fuel or larger DI injectors coupled with a larger HPFP. Good luck.

But....now I look at your profile* it says your in England. Id be going with a Turbotechnic s280 or if you wanna keep it stock looking a x37 or 47. If you wanna roll BT go a Peron kit. Good luck!

X57‘s were plagued with issues initially and did not put out the kind of numbers Pumaspeed claimed on them. No idea about the X58 its really new. Though its kinda funny because the X57 was supposed to be their big numbers turbo but now they are doing the X58? Hmmm somethings not right.
PS cough cough Hot Tub’s ;) Monster’s hmmm ya no. What speaks for itself is the number of people using the different Turbo’s . Do not go by the distributors words as pure fact. Look at the number of people using the different Turbo’s you will actually start to see what Turbo’s work and what are not widely used. Go with the stuff that is widely used as its most likely more reliable and safe.
Many more S280 users than X57’s. plain and simple.

I'll check with the tuning guy when I next see him 'cause he knows a lot about what're MOT breakers and what's not, but I've got a good feeling about the S280. Not only has it got a good rep, but it's actually made here, and surely they wouldn't make a turbo that's illegal for our MOT, right? There's also the point that Pumaspeed are trying to sell tuning kits that're more powerful than this turbo puts out.

Anything over 280whp is mostly useless on the street. If you want to destroy your tires and hardly ever enjoy all your new power, go past 300, and prepare for speeding tickets and reckless driving that might endanger innocent humans. If you want a useable and enjoyable street car, go under 300.

If you're building a track car, the above is irrelevant, shoot for the moon.
