I just recently got a MBRP catback installed, and really should have done more research before buying. I also got the Whoosh catted DP at the same time. The combo is crazy loud inside to the point i don't think i can stand it, i drive 23 miles mostly freeway ~70mph one way to work everyday and the drone and volume even getting up to a desired speed is super loud.

My question is what would be the easier/ better way to move forward, either get a 1/4 wave resonator/ Helmholtz resonator fabricated. or suck it up and drop the big $$ for a Thermal R&D catback.

I've read through a bunch of the different feedback on here on the MBRP as well as one guys thread on fixing the drone (after purchasing and installing the MBRP) and just cant really make up my mind on a good way forward. I like how the MBRP sounds on startup and outside the car, but driving it is obnoxious..

I don't have a solution but subbing to this thread. I have a gutted car with the same exact setup waiting for time to install. I've also removed sound deadening. I fully plan to wear earplugs for any drive longer than 20 mins.

Well....hate to say it....But if you have done your reading about these MBRP exhausts. "We told you so"! I'd chalk it up to lessons learned and see if you can drone it down* Good luck....or just make it wall art in the garage and get the Thermal R&D.

I'll be turning 66 in a few days and have partial hearing loss in both ears. In part due to attending some rather loud concerts back the 70's and in part as a result of spending too much time around cars with open exhausts. So while I do enjoy a bit of rumble from a V8 and the sound of a hot 4 cylinder at speed I now temper my experience to sound levels that won't do any more damage to the hearing I have left. I suggest that some here take the time to consider the long term effects of what you do now. Because I can tell you based on experience that poor hearing is not the least bit pleasurable. To be blunt if something makes your ears ring you have done damage to your hearing. How much damage was done is dependent on how long your ears ring and I can assure that all the damage done is Additive.

That said I have a Cobb catback on my ST and am quite satisfied with it. As long as you aren't climbing a 7% grade there really isn't any "drone" but it will still produce a nice bit of snarl at full throttle in the higher rpms. In addition is is 100% 304 Stainless so I should not ever have to replace the exhaust on my car.

^^^Yes, all of the 'straight pipe' youngunz somehow think that they are totally IMMORTAL, and that nothing bad could ever happen to them, let alone severe hearing loss.

Live by the "If it's too loud, you're too old" 'credo' at your very own PERIL, because even the very BEST hearing aids, and co$tlie$t surgeries, like the Jeff Bezos co$t level, (even the co-pays) cochlear transplants, etc., can only 'fix' so much damage.

And if there is auditory NERVE damage, even that will not 'save' you, even if you have a trillionaires coin to pay for it.

For the rest of us, once those cilia cells are dead, there is NO coming back.

I am almost 66, and also have severe hearing loss, due to the very same sources of damage, along with listening to music at way too high a volume, in cars. [:(]

Heh I had an ear rebuilt bones reconstructed and ear drum reskinned. it came out good . It was due to a ear drum collapse,. Oh and I am in the sound/music business. I happy to say I got back lost hearing but I still have some damage from years of concerts and whatnot.

LOL, this thread needs a Geritol ad thrown in here. I'll contribute. Been in aviation for the last 41 years and 4 were on the flight deck of the U.S.S Midway, with F4-Phantoms launching with full afterburner, not as bad a top fuel drag race, but close. Always wore double ear protection, even while shooting. Annual hearing test results have always come back good.

Have you or a loved one been diagnosed with hearing loss or tinnitus after exposure to an MBRP exhaust system? You may be entitled to financial compensation.

In all seriousness I have the same exhaust as OP and it drives me insane, especially with a rear seat delete. Going Thermal eventually. After that the MBRP is going in the garbage, I’m not even going to try and sell that to anyone lol

look into Greddy,i have had mine for 8k miles or so and love it.
Does yours have drone around 2500-3500? I find that I have to either baby it around or wring it out to stay away from the "drone zone." I've also got a Mishimoto downpipe but I think it was the same for the week or so I had it hooked to the stock dp. I drove across the country with a muffler/resonator delete and honestly after having the GReddy for a few months I think I would have been worse off if I did the same trip with the GReddy. It definitely made the car quieter on cold starts which my neighbors appreciate. And I do like how it is one of the few exhausts that's actually bolted together and not just band clamps. I'm considering going to shop and going full custom, but that'll be a year or 2 down the road at minimum. Saving up for intercooler, AP and Dizzy tune atm. I've also heard that deleting the sound symposer helps with drone but I doubt it will fix how much I have.

Yes, the operative action/statement is the bolded above, but how many are going to do that while driving?

If it's so loud that you can't carry on a conversation at normal levels at cruise, it's too loud. When you have to resort to ear plugs while driving, that's more than a bit too much.

My Uncle Bob was a Navy Pilot. His first aircraft was the F4 Wildcat and then later on he flew the F6 Hellcat. His final Aircraft was the F4 Phantom. Back around 1962 he planted is flight helmet on my head and I was just thrilled. I also remember that it seemed to very heavy to this 7 year old.

Thanks for all the opinions/ advice. im approaching 30 myself and already have pretty bad hearing so continuing to drive with the MBRP will most likely make that worse. so i think instead of dealing with the headache of modifying the MBRP to get rid of the drone ill just drop money on the Thermal R&D..
After that the MBRP is going in the garbage, I’m not even going to try and sell that to anyone lol
I would do this but i feel like i need to get a little money back from it to some younger guy that wants all that loud..

Also with the Thermal R&D, does anyone know if the support brace it comes with has hardware? the guy that put my MBRP couldnt get the factory support brace back on and i never got it back or the hardware to reattach it.

If anyone knows the right size nut for it that would help as well.

As long as the little post/studs attached to the unibody are not sheared off/cross threaded, you can buy some stainless lock nuts at a True Value/the big chain hardware stores to replace the factory ones.

I do not know the size offhand, but I am sure that someone will chime in with the correct thread count. [wink]

I have been hanging around these forums for 5 years now and I have read this exact thread a dozen times. Don't people research before buying stuff? Sorry to be an asshole.

Sell it, and spend some money and get the one you really want. Regret is a hard thing to live with when modding a car. Better do it right the first time even if it costs more money. If it's too expensive, stop modding your car and rethink your life.
