Engine Pull/Install

Who has pulled and installed the engine? I am looking at getting a Mountune engine and considering if it is something I could do myself if I purchased the long block.

How many hours did it take?
Did you need specialty tools?
Would it be better to have a shop due it as it was a huge pain?

Local dealership told me 17.78 hours is what the book says, but I cannot imagine that it would take that long to pull a long block and reinstall it. They charge $160 an hour. Seems pretty excessive to me, having it be such a small motor.

Thanks,

I did it. You can check out my build thread for pointers, I have the same engine. It wasn't too much of a paint. The hardest part was the wiring harness which is very confusing if you've never done it before. With me working a full time job it took me about a month to complete. Dedicated mostly the weekends to it. You do not need specialty tools for just taking the motor out. You will if you intend to take it apart. I believe there is a special tool for the cam sprockets.

That month also was me basically changing everything under the hood. Engine was taken out and put back in in 2 days. Wiring harness took a minute to figure out.

Well I don’t have a garage unfortunately. I could possibly borrow one but was hoping it could be something done in a day or two on your own.

I’ll check your thread out and see.
I have not pulled an engine before but always wanted too.

You could replace it in a weekend, if you dedicate the majority of your day to it. It only takes me about 40 minutes to drop the transmission after doing it about 6 times.

I'll say this about getting the axles out: Don't bother removing the nut for the axle or the lower ball joint. Take the bolts out for the lower control arms, and remove the axle/knucke/hub/control arm as an assembly on both sides.

If you plan on lifting the engine out, lift the engine and transmission as an assembly instead of removing the transmission separately. Ford recommends you drop the entire assembly out of the bottom of the car. Note that unless you remove the serpentine belt , unbolt the A/C compressor and hang the A/C compressor to the side (which may be in the way of removing the engine), you will have to empty your A/C system and have it re-charged later. Alternatively if you do lose the A/C you can remove the front of the car and roll the engine and transmission out of the engine bay on a jack.

I can't speak to wiring but it seems like you can just unplug everything and lay it to the side of the engine bay.

This is good information guys. I would need to lift it out as I don't have a lift and would not be able to get enough clearance to drop it. :/

My local Harbor Freight has an engine hoist that seems reasonable enough to do the job.

You may be able to rent one from a tool rental place as well, I don't know where you live but Sunbelt Rentals is pretty prolific in most states.

Im not sure. I have a few friends that have done some engine installs, I am going to see if they might be able to help out. Its not something I am doing right now, but am making plans too. Just waiting to hear back on some part lists and build up a bit more funding.
I figure the more I research the better.

Anyone have the tech manual for the engine. :alien:

I'm debating on building an engine, but it's kinda hard to justify when you can get several stock motors for what mountune charges for a long block. I may just get a junkyard engine and rebuild it myself

Those are new blocks and new components though....
A new block from ford is about $3800 with a $1600 Core charge. Mountune wants $5900 and that’s no core charge.
I’m not sure what’s involved but machining and components etc could be worth it?

I get the new oem argument, but if you're gonna be replacing components why not get a junkyard block for $600. I'm surprised the mountune block is that cheap, I was under the impression it was like $8k

So the next question is...When you wanna do my trans. when I wanna do A LSD?HEHE

There are Two types of blocks from Mountune....There is the Mountune high performance block for about $6k and the Mountune MRX block for about 8k.

I plan on the performance block and probably the S280 turbo.

I’m not sure where people are getting long blocks in junk yards for $600 but that’s not the prices I’ve seen.

A lot of ferd vehicles used the 1.6L Ecoboost engine. That is why they can find them for cheap!

Would rebuilding a used one be just as well as a new one from Mountune?
I’ve never built one so I don’t know how viable that options is to me.

Oh, I didn't know there were two. Looks like the MRX blocks adds cams, head studs and a cylinder support system. It doesn't look like any head work has been done, so it seems like it makes a lot more sense just to get a mountune short block for $2,200 and just get the existing head decked

Would you trust a 120k mileage head on a $2200 new lower block? Or would you feel more comfortable spending a little more to ensure all parts are new and installed to spec?

I guarantee if you drove a Fiesta ST and a GT350 back to back.....you'd come to one conclusion. You can't drive the GT350....like you can the FiST.
