OEM TPMS Sensor Hibernation Revival ?

The OEM TPM sensors enter a hibernation mode when the vehicle isn't active for a long period.

Every year when switching back between Winter/Summer wheels, it takes at least two full tanks of fuel before all the TPMS sensors will reactivate.

Does anyone know of a quick 100% tested and guaranteed way to bring a TMPS out of hibernation? (without cracking the tire bead)

The Autel MaxiTPMS TS401 will allow me to trigger and read sensor data without putting the vehicle into learn mode.

If you use a little device like the one you can buy on Amazon, you just do the training when you swap the tires. No driving necessary. No difference between your tires sitting in the garage for 5 months or having sat on the shelf at the parts warehouse for a couple of years. I just did it day before yesterday.

Edit: I take that back. I did drive up and down the driveway before I torqued the nuts, and I trained the TPMS after that.

@SteveS - Curious what that device would do different, versus the Autel device I've been using? Maybe I should call Autel Support and confirm that it has the same functionality though, truth or not, would be surprised if they admitted otherwise.


Nothing particularly useful in the owner's manual, or the service manual.

I want to be sure there's no misunderstanding.

I've been using the Autel device from the beginning.

I've been having to drive 800+ miles before I can get all four of the OEM sensors to signal. Individual sensors will come out of hibernation at various points over that distance. This has been the case over two OEM sets of wheels. I replaced the sensors on one set thinking they were bad, only to have the same experience the next season.

This go-round, I had three of the four come out of hibernation with relatively little driving. One sensor flip'n went BACK into hibernation. The sensors that have read, all report a "normal" battery level to the Autel device.

They're relatively cheap tools. I went ahead and ordered one. Hopefully it'll arrive prior to them reactivating on their own; that way I'll be able to perform an honest test against the Autel tool I've been using.

As far as sensors being asleep, if spinning is required to wake them up, the ones on my snow tires got woken up the first time when the tire store balanced them. But when I just reinstalled the OEM wheels, I only went to the end of the driveway and back before I retrained them.

The Big O tire store I go to showed me they use the exact same tool I do.

I just reread your initial post. You do need to do the push brake and release, press start button 2 seconds and press again, etc. routine to do the sensors. The car has to be reading the sensors to keep the tpms light from coming on.

The Autel device can read the sensor without the car. I have zero trouble getting the car into programming mode.

I used the Ford unit, but I had to drive the car for a few miles to get the sensors to "wake up". They are triggered by centrifugal force. After that I used the little box on each wheel. Worked like a charm.
