I'm likely ordering some inexpensive custom wheels that I stumbled onto last night. Every aspect is customizable. At this point, I'm having a hard time making choices. I'm conflicted by too much internet research. For both of the following wheel choices, I'd go with 215/45r16 Falken RT615k+:

  • If I go for aesthetics, what's the perfect flush, no poke, no-rub offset? At 40, do folks who are running Dekagrams notice any negative handling changes? Those seem to be just about perfect to me. Konig's seemingly never going to produce bronze and I don't want black on my black car.
  • If I go for handling, at 16x8 can I go with the stock offset to avoid scrub radius issues, or would the tires rub suspension bits?
I read just about every obvious pinned thread and used search, but I didn't find any posts rendering a clear judgement on either point.

Valid questions that I have had as well. From the responses I got (on the dekagram thread), it seems that performance handling is not compromised from the reduced offset.

Going from 47.5 to 40 is not really a big difference. I'm running 42 offset on my winter tires and do not feel any weirdness. There might be slightly more torque steer, but honestly I cannot really compare because the tires are completely different than the stock tires.

Another point, the dekas being 8" wide should negate any loss of turn-in performance lost going from 17" to 16". I say "should" because I have not mounted my new dekagrams (sitting in my living room awaiting the "thaw"), and have no personal experience to speak of.
*A lot of this also depends on the tires you run, of course. I'm planning on bfg sc2 205/45, btw.

On your other question: I would think you can go up to at least 45 offset with an 8" wide wheel , considering the Avanti storm run that offset in a 17 x 8.

Thanks for the feedback! My custom option, sadly, washed out due to weight. The wheels were thirty pounds each!

Have you checked out the hypergrams? Awesome looking wheel (matte grey), but only comes in a 17". I wouldve went that route, but really wanted to size down due to the shitty nyc streets I regularly drive on.

I have. They're very nice looking, but the roads in Atlanta's "urban" areas are terrible for a place that gets no real winter weather. I'm looking to reduce the destructive impact of the potholes we have around here. Every minute or two I cringe from the massive jolts running through my car. At some point, I'm probably going to have to look at adjustable coilovers to soften the ride a bit. The streets here are ridiculous.

I'm looking to reduce the destructive impact of the potholes we have around here. Every minute or two I cringe from the massive jolts running through my car. At some point, I'm probably going to have to look at adjustable coilovers to soften the ride a bit. The streets here are ridiculous.
Oh yes, 16" at a minimum for sure! Another advantage to lower offset is a bit of softening up. The further out the wheels are, the more load on the suspension there is.

Has anyone ran Indy 500’s or eagle F1’s on a 17x8?

Pretty sure I’m just going to go with 615+ with my tarmacs just want to get some input on if someone has ran those 2 other options.

When the stock bridgestones go I think I’ll switch to 205/45R17. There are a ton of choices in that size. I will get a slightly taller effective gearing which will help with traction in 1-2 gears. Also I can run 30-32 psi get a bigger contact patch and of course more comfort on these rough Concrete LA streets and freeways.

Well I already got 19k on the tires. Moved the fronts to the back with 5/32” remaining. Whenever the fronts are 4/32” I’ll need new tires all around. Hopefully about 8k miles, but how did you know!?

Anyways I find the stock suspension to be pretty dialed especially at higher speeds and on twisty roads. What’s lacking is comfort. I have no plans to lower the car so a taller tire seems like a great solution for me.

I was being facetious. I only got about 8,000 miles out of the stock Potenzas. Great tires, terrible wear.

Using a Bridgestone RE-71R 215/45/R17 as an example, it is allowed to be mounted on a 7-8" Stock is a 7" so it works fine in that regard. It should not rub on on the strut nor the lip of the fender. It will however rub on the fender liners (front and back) with stock suspension at full compression (like when autocrossing)

Has anyone gone with 225/35/17 on stock wheels? There are the Accelera PHI-R for only $310 set of 4... hmmm. Used the tire size calculator and they are actually 0.3" smaller diameter than stock, doesn't sound like a good way to go if I wanted a little more cushion. Prob should just stick with 215/40/17 on stock wheels, get an additional 0.3" of diameter over stock or go 205/45/17, just make sure they are nice and sticky and get the full 0.8" additional diameter over stock.

^^^A 225/40-17 would be PERFECT, but every single tire manufacturer out there outright REFUSES to produce anything in that size, save for pure road race, 00 tread wear, slicks. [mad]
