Bigger oil filter ( bigger than FL-400S )

I typically use a bigger oil filter on most of my cars. Back when I owned my 225 Audi TT I used what they called the "Big Kahuna". I was searching around I know stock uses FL-910S. A step bigger above the 910 is the FL-400S which mountune suggests. While searching for a larger filter I cross referenced FL-400s on WiX's website and the WIX 51516XP came up ( xp being extended performance). I was googling around for the WIX filter and turns out the mustang eco boost guys use this WIX filter instead of their FL-400s to help increase oil capacity and dwell time. I'm no oil expert but I do believe in running the biggest filter possible, helps with increase filtration media, increase oil capacity, and dwell time.


Normally I use the FL400s, The 910 Shown was installed on previous oil change as I had it laying around.

Do you think there is enough room to get it on and off if you have the Mishi radiator?

I'm not sure. If you were able to fit a FL-400s on with a mishi then the extra 1/2 " shouldn't be an issue. I am considering on purchasing a mishimoto radiator as well, if you do try it please let me know if it works :).

That is literally the same oil filter I have been using for the past 3 changes.

Yes, it fits with the Mishimoto radiator.

When you actually sit down and think about it ...you don't really get that much more oil into the system with the larger filter....now if you used an oil cooler and a larger filter. then I could justify it. [thumb]

Not to derail the thread, but is there an oil filter relocation kit available or has anyone done it diy?

Mobil 1 filter cross is a M1-209 for the cross with the wix oil filter 51516.Here is a reference for size with the 910s!

The only thing we do not know about all of these bigger filters is whether or not the pressure relief valve is set to the same exact pressure setting as the factory 910S sized filter.

I am guessing that Mountune did the research on the 400S' valve to be able to rec it over the smaller 910S, but maybe not? [dunno]

I will say that antidrainback valve is the same in as pretty much every oil filter nowadays...its either they have it or they don't....I'll say I haven't seen too many without it in almost all oil filters used.

I remember running the FL-400S as the OEM filter in my 1994 Ford Escort 1.9L SOHC 88hp five speed.
They tweaked the design, made it smaller roughly eight to ten years ago.
The older, larger FL-400S is on the left, the newer smaller FL-400S is on the right.

What I "observed" at the time was that the redesigned smaller filter seemed to have quicker flow. With the larger/old filter design, post oil change, if I didn't floor the accelerator for an extended crank time prior to engine start, would briefly get lifter clatter. Never got that when forgot to prime, with the new/smaller filter. Also sounds good during frigid starts, and on the rare occasion when it sits for more than two days. So long as one actually does change the oil, bigger ain't necessarily always better. Just depends on the design specs, quality and use.

In the event that the oil filter becomes so plugged that it won't flow anymore, the bypass valve will open up and allow oil to bypass the filter media (unfiltered) and still flow through the system saving the main/rod bearings and the rest of the engine.

This would likely never happen to anyone of us seeing as we all have pretty good maintenance practices as car enthusiasts. But it's a good safety feature to save an engine in case a filter does become plugged up to the point of no flow.

I do not know if these engines have an internal bypass/pressure relief valve near the oil pump, the way that LSx engines do, or if they rely TOTALLY on the one in the oil filter itself. [???:)]

I am planning on doing an oil change at 3k myself and I am considering of going with one of the bigger filter options including the FL-400S. I read through the other oil filter threads and it sounded like there should be no problem with running these larger filters and a potential for a little better lubrication and filtering performance.

Are there any warranty concerns with going with a larger filter? Does anyone have a recommendation for the best filter to run on a stock engine? (I don't frequent BITOG...yet)

I already had the dealer do oil changes at 100 and 700 miles with Motorcraft Sae 5w-20 Api Gf-5 and the 910S filter.

Ill stick with stock size oil filters. Local guy lost his rousch mustang motor to a chevy dealer that put too big of an oil filter on their car(spun rod bearing on cold start due to low oil pressure)

If you're concerned about warranty I would just use the FL-910 w/ 5w20 approved oil. I've been using FL-400s with Amsoil 10w-30. I'm running BT w/ an oil cooler and track / beat on the car often. Just recently I made the switch to the wix filter. It is my understanding that the Wix XP filter is essentially amsoil's re-branded filter.

There's something else going on there....oil filters get cross referenced all the time to different sizes due to a shop running out of the correct size. I deleted the oil cooler system on my Typhoon and went directly to the block instead of the adapter that was on the lines in the fender. Sure made oil changes alot less messier and the filter is smaller.

The filter media is different ....synthetic fibers....glass fibers....both are excellent filtration rates in the high 90's and can withstand ext. Drain intervals into the 10k if you really want to do that...a filter is cheap insurance to change out when it's due at 5k.

I'm currently running the Mobil 1 M1-209A, just put in a Mountune radiator and don't think I'll be running it after this oil change. There looks to be just *just* enough clearance to get it off and possibly on, but more than likely I'll switch to a shorter one for ease of install/removal
