Ford recalls 440k vehicles due to fire risk

It’s not really a “fix”. The coolant will still burn off. This is so you are aware it’s disappearing and to lessen the chance of fire. Coolant loss shouldn’t be happening on a modern car.

Best way to determine effectiveness would be to get some localized before and after temps. (infrared temp gun?)

Absent of that, we may be able to get some sense by comparing the altered coolant exchange flow rates/volumes using external lines and valves, to the changes in the 2016+ heads. (which probably also had some external changes) Effective or ineffectiveness of the changes aside, if you have a hot spot, diverting and altering coolant flows is what you need to do to begin to address it.

I merely skimmed it but they're also allowing time for compression testing, cooling system pressure testing, checking stored codes on overheat, stalls, (indications of abuse,) and performing some tear-down in order to inspect the backside of the engine.

It's just a sensor and new hoses right? ..to band-aid poor cooling passage in the head, or am I reading it wrong.

I guess you could simplify it down to that. New coolant bottle design with piping, wiring harness to go with the coolant level sensor, rerouted turbo coolant plumbing and a few more odds and ends to hold it all together.

But essentially, yes, this is just "workaround" for the design defect in the older cylinder heads.

I have to admit... that’s a way more involved fix than I predicted. Personally, changing the flow rate etc should fix the issue. I really expected ford to just shrugge their shoulders and wait for repairs to start rolling in on the customers dime. Happy to admit, it seems I was wrong. Good for ford !! (Finally)

Who cares how much stuff they have to remove. Fact is they are issuing stuff to do it. Fact is they are doing something about it. It's called standing behind the product and not telling the customer to take a hike.

Or are you just surprised? It sounds like your freaked? If not excuse my response.

So you are criticizing them for being thorough? I glanced over it. It looked like you had to remove quite a few things to get to the area to change it out. Have you worked on Modern cars much? It's pretty much par for the course. Also again I repeat why do you care, are you a Ford Tech? A Ford Tech who is bemoaning the amount of recall warranty work he might have to do?

As far as I am concerned from a customers perspective they are doing the work not I, so what is the issue? Seriously you are making a mountain out of a molehill here. Lol

My big concern is that every time I have taken my car in for service they have screwed up something. Now I may be a bit pickier than the average ford owner but I find it unacceptable to find bolt heads that are stripped, plastic screws that are never replaced, inner painted panels to have all the paint scratched off.
With this amount of work its a ton of opportunity for these Monkey's with wrenches to screw more stuff up.

Suggest that we watch the 2013-15 Escape, Fusion and Transit Connect forums for feedback on how well the latest attempt at repair may (or may not) address the issue. It seems they initially tried to patch this using software ([:0]). [scratch] I see the source of the cynicism. Big corps move slow and it often takes a year (or few) for them to really finalize on anything.

Maybe we should seed a dedicated thread titled: "FEEDBACK: Your Recall Work"
...or maybe more specific, "FEEDBACK: Your 1.6L Engine Recall Work"
...in each of the forums and see what the cat drags in...

Should we hand the bill to FoMoCo? They’re changing all the RS motors. I suppose that’s far less numbers than the defective 1.6 though.
What defective 1.6 are you talking about? The overheating problem? I was under the impression this recall corrected that by adding a coolant level light to the affected engines worldwide. Did I miss something new about defective engines?

The issue is the effected vehicles have a localized heating issue in a single cooling passage in the head. The design flaw was later corrected. We are not getting the new head, just a dummy light that tells us we're doomed. [emoji16]
