If you want turbo noises go for the map intake (I had one it sounds good, but heat soaks). If you don't care about stuff like that then save your money because the snorkel won't give you any noticeable gains

He's right for sure. We've discussed this on another thread. I bought the snorkel 95% for looks. It just fits the car's personality.

Question about ram style intake and heat soak. This happens only under stop and go conditions? If you are driving on the highway and getting steady air will this be a issue?

Heat soak generally only happens whole your car is stationary and there's not enough air passing over the FMIC to dissipate the heat.

Honestly, I would just stay stock, as the OEM intake is a pretty darn good CAI. If you're dying to spend the $200 on an intake, then I would get the Velossa Mouth, as it at least still retain the CAI set up vs the MAP, as well as, looking kinda cool.

Just get a drop in filter. I have Cobb's but to be honest if I were to go back and do it again I would have just stayed with my drop in filter I received from them when I bought the AP.

Now that's nothing against Cobb's: I love it. Great sound, looks amazing also. Just saying if I had a budget. I got mine for sale through Modbargains so it wasn't more than $200 shipped IIRC.

Thanks for the input. I guess that settles that! Much appreciated.

I personally went with a Green Filter drop-in (http://amzn.to/1RUA5pp) and just recently ordered a Velossa Snorkle. It's one of the few simple mods that do something cool to the exterior of the car. Their data suggests there's some improvement in the amount of air the engine gets as well. I don't know if others have tested it independently, I haven't kept up with that thread in a bit.

how do you figure this? The intake is a purpose designed ram inlet that allows pressure build up inside the intake tract.

Here is the airflow increase in our FoST intake. We saw gains of 8 hp worth of air flow.

Here is data from the FiST big mouth.

We saw tons more mass airflow in our test vehicle and in every gear.

The intakes are designed to take advantage of the motion of the car to build air pressure and boost mass flow which is the surest way to increase horsepower. All tests were done on the same day with the same car. These plots are raw, untouched data.

Here is our new performance section we just started in the web store.

http://www.velossatechdesign.com/performance-data/

Converting stagnation (total) pressure into static pressure is the intent of the intake, you want the motion of your car to be useful and having a forward facing OPTIMIZED intake with proper convergence angles and MINIMAL MOMENTUM loss is critical for good pressure conversion. I dont just design pretty stuff, it has to work.

If all you care about is noise then ya the injen is good. But I would personally stay with a closed air box. Most of these intakes are metal and riding right above the turbo. They are going to get hot. If you can save a little more money though, that mishimoto intake looks good and it is still on pre sale for a couple of weeks. Its still a closed box and it retained the factory inlet. This could potentially be paired with the snorkel later down the road.

Cobb intake with a snorkel FTW
that way you get the closed box for the ram air effect and it stays plastic intake pipes to help prevent heat soak

I'm partial to an aftermarket intake setup just for the sounds alone. Call me a ricer...whatever, lol. Makes the driving experience that much better.

Oh and not to stir the pot and piss a bunch of people off for whatever reason, but I like my CP-E intake because it 1) retains a closed box to prevent heat soak and 2) has its own ram air scoops for fresh air.

Heat soak happens when there isn't air flow in the engine compartment and especially when the intake is pulling hot air from inside the engine compartment.

Another factor with true cold air intakes is if the intake tube is a conductive material like aluminum, that under hood heat can start to warm up the cold air before it gets to the turbocharger and then if the intercooler has no air flow, that under hood heat and the heat from the turbocharger get all the way to the combustion chamber which obviously isn't ideal.

The stock intake is a cold air design and the plastic it is made of is a pretty good insulator which are the reasons why stock is pretty hard to improve on.

The Velossatech snorkel won't contribute to heat soak and the ram effect can only help.

I think the 2J cowl intake is probably better than stock with a snorkel but the noise stops me from getting one. I don't think there is an advantage in anything else unless you count noise or bling. Some intakes are probably worse.

With a big turbo you need to cut holes in the stock air box. A friend of mine with a big turbo had part of his intake collapsing due to lack of air going through the filter. But up to stage 3 stock is fine. Just throw a drop in filter in there
