If you were to build your own stage 2...

Just cutting to the chase of the best setup as of now. Intake, FMIC, AP, and who does the best e30 tune. I'm not sure if a higher e40 exists?

I was looking at Injen,MTC. How much power are these mods good for with a e30 tune?

If I were to go back and go Stage 2 all over again, it would be with DHM Race intercooler and Crash bar, and either 2jr or CPE intake. and the exhaust I would choose would be any 2.5" one that you like the sound of for the stock turbo. (MAP or COBB for me)

Don't mind those silly pictures above. That's a great question. I feel that a FMIC + Accessport + custom tune is a great way to spend $1000 and get a great return. For another $1000 more you can get an intake and maybe some braces or some exhaust pieces. I started a thread on this very topic a week or two ago, there is some helpful info there. I am very happy with my "stage 2" as they say setup. I just finished my final revision and the car is fantastic.

Good luck!

The best part about 'staged' popcorn is that I get to make much more money than buyers will get benefit...

OP, skip the intake unless you get the 2J. Definitely avoid the Injen as lots of members have complained about or sold theirs due to the added heat-soak. You'll be better served with a DP or CBE to free up the exhaust than an intake. A good custom E30-40 tune will get you pretty much all that the OEM turbo can give, the FMIC adds consistency and reliability, and anything else is basically just bling or noise.

To build on what dyn085 said...

Get an AccessPort from a tuner (Stratified, Mountune, Freektune, Tune Plus, whatever) and ask for a discount, because they might give you one. Worst they can say is no. You can also wait for a holiday sale or coupon to show up. They are frequent. Almost every tuner offers a free custom tune with purchase. You get the Cobb maps for free with this. This is the most important mod. Everything else is useless without it except the intercooler. ($450 - $500)

But a quality intercooler. I have the MTC intercooler myself. It's about $350 shipped from some dude on eBay. Other options that are good are the Deadhook and Map coolers. ($350 - $500)

Total cost of about $1000 factoring in shipping and taxes.

Research the shit out of and buy some good tires after this, maybe an RMM, and then get busy on shifter mods IMO.

You don't "need" anything else other than the two I suggested. You will achieve about 95% of what everyone else with all those nice noisemaker mods can make and spend a fraction of the cost doing it. After the AP/ tune and intercooler everything starts to become a VERY diminished return on investment.

Actually some intakes do provide gains...thanks to Hijinx for providing the graph below, though it was taken on a v Dyno it does demonstrate that you get HP gains below 6,000 rpm where most of us live, and great torque gains too:

Also from the manufacturer on a real Dyno:

Except for the fact that Hijinx has already explained to you (and you can see in the chart) that the fueling is different and that that is where the additional power is coming from.

But yes, the manufacturer did show gains, almost perfectly even across the rpm range (lol), when he did his dyno's on different days.

Regrettably, I can see Jeffs posts on Tapatalk when someone quotes him. It's pretty fucked up he'd remove the context from someone else's data and reuse it to promote his agenda. I bet Jeff watches a LOT of Fox News.

It shouldn't be too surprising after seeing his acceptance speech after getting some 'likes'. A lot of times it's easier to tell people what they want to hear in comparison to actually telling the truth. Adding the fact that he has the capability of proving his side but would rather choose not too should speak pretty loudly in and of itself.

I just looked at the cp-e chart and it even says in the test comments that the tune is different, lol.

Great advice. I cancelled the order for the Injen intake. I was about to pull the trigger and retain the warranty with the mountune 215. Digging into the fine print it appears it would shorten my extended power train warranty. I have about 20k on the odometer and it's a 14. Spending that kind of money for a limited time made no sense. Money is better spend on just a tune (e30 or e40) with a FMIC. From reading some of the posts the intake adds but very little and the exhaust the same.

Simply put can someone tell me the stock hp/tq vs tune 93 & e30/40 tune with FMIC. I just want to see if this is really a night and day difference. I really appreciate it. It really makes the case. Yes, dynos can vary but I'm looking for ball park numbers.

Great choice. I can't comment on the fuel/tune question but I highly recommend you use some of the money you were going to spend on the intake and get some bracing, install is easy and it will make a huge difference with traction. I just finished my custom tune, car is quite fast and I still have 90% traction in 2nd gear with braces and RMM. Before braces with only stage 1 tune I had hardly any traction.

Good luck!

You can probably check the dyno thread, maybe someone there is FMIC and E30 only. The only person that I know had V-Dyno's of that combo was Razorlab, and they wiped his posts so it's not on this site anymore. I want to say he was near 230hp/300tq, but a.) I'm not 100%, and b.) he was also a pro-tuner. Maybe koozy remembers.

some of it is still available elsewhere, but here it is in the spirit of providing info.

Intercooler, E30 tune, and internal wastegate will net you 90% of the gains you'll ever see on the stock turbo.

I looked through that thread earlier thinking there was a V-Dyno chart, now I see it's typed in. 210/282 for just an FMIC (an inexpensive one at that), E30, and a 22 psi tune is pretty decent-especially considering the fact that he wasn't overspeeding the life out of the turbo to get it.

Edit: Here's the V-Dyno I was thinking of, but it was E40-

Pardon my ignorance, what is a v-dyno? I have used a dyno jet in the past. I looked on mountune and there 230 package knocks a full second 5.9 to 60. This pumps out way more power. What car would this stage 2 (FMIC e30) keep up with?

So what's the story behind that? I remember it was a big contention point and a lot of what I learned about the car early on were from hsi (very) data-driven posts and testing methodologies.
