The merits of stopping at a stage 2+ setup

Definitely and I appreciate that. You're right. But recall that in my very first post I did list only the tune and intercooler as the necessary things at right around $1000. So I certainly did not say that my intake mods were necessary, rather only what I chose to do. I gave a range between $1000 and $2000 depending on what a person might want to spend. I spent the high-end of that but about the same can be achieved for the low-end.
To fit your "stage" and price range: CP-E FMIC, CP-E RMM, Cobb AP w/Stratified, Pierce's street pack=$1800. All of that can be done in your garage in an afternoon. Take the remaining 500 that could have been used on intake stuff and do some creature comforts like a short shift kit, symposer delete and such. Not that you really have any benefit or merit to stopping at any specific "stage" of modding. You do the amount of modding that fits your end goal with as little wasted items as possible, like skipping an intake unless you just like the sound of it.

I would be willing to bet that people would have agreed with you if you hadn't listed the $500 worth of intake mods, the worst overall 'cost-effective' power-adder, in your list of most 'cost-effective' power-adders.
Hit the nail on the head.

Jeff, we will be having a Big Meet on May 14th, at Buford Dam Park. I'd love to see your car in person though we may not see eye to eye on this particular issue 100% :)

I said that my setup was IMHO the best first collection of mods, not the end-all-be-all final ultimate setup for everyone.

Glad someone else is in the same place.

I love the Cobb's early pull, the Strat tune just feels weaker. Yes it's better pulling to redline but I don't know if it's worth it to me.

Which do you prefer?

The stage 1 tune definitely is for $50. I only paid an additional $25 for the stage 2 tune, that's cheap for an extra tune so I'd say yes. But I'm not sure which I'll end up using, need to drive more.

Yes, considering the above I'll probably get a custom tune eventually. I'd love the early grunt of the Cobb tune mixed with the smoothness and higher rpm pull of the Strat tune.
FYI, the difference between Cobb Stage 2, and Adam's base tune (I haven't done a dyno run since revisions). I fully support going custom tune, and I look forward to doing a fresh dyno run this year sometime to show the progress.

Edit: The custom tune for $250 got me more power than a $400 intake on a Cobb OTS tune.

167 hp? Seems low

So is the stratified tune worth it
It's ok tbh, nothing I would brag about. Also considering if I would go back once I get my dp+IC on. I have yet to feel like, that this car is quick for me atleast.

Thanks man I really appreciate that. I'd love to swing over but I will just be returning from 9 days in Ukraine visiting some friends for the first part of May.

When is the next meet? I'm not on FB....

Wow that is insane. I talked a bit with Adam and was considering him for my tune but I had not seen that. Very impressive. I'd like to see your final numbers/graph. How does the final revision feel compared to his base tune?

Smoother, mostly. I think I'm only on Revision 2, since I don't have a lot of time/space to make a pull. Plan on finding a road soon to get him a new log, though.

The power numbers don't matter, just look at the difference between the actual runs.
The big thing I feel is the 20hp/40ftlb difference at 3000 rpm. Just from a daily driving perspective, anyways.

Hi guys, late to the game. 2015 ST, access port with Cobb stage 2 and tune, stock cat, 3" cat back, catch can, Pierce braces, sways, stock shocks and springs (stock ride height for Rallycross), Mishimoto oil cooler with radiator on order, Team Dynamics 17 x 8 with 235/40 NT-05's on rolled fenders, stock brakes with Montune pads, ss brake lines and good fluid, with plan to run Montune LSD, maybe hybrid turbo if smog legal. Purpose, street driven road race track day car to challenge kids to race me at the track. I am a LAPD officer that runs a anti-street racing program (see www.lapdracing.com). As such must keep car California smog legal. Can't run E85 because no station close to the tracks I run (Willow Springs ,Button Willow, Fontana, Camarillo autocross, Etc.). Suggestions? Custom tune? (give me the address) Ran 1.43 at big willow as is but want to go faster, help!

I would highly recommend an etune. From my own personal experience I would recommend to go with Adam Tune+. I went from stage 2Cobb OTS to his etune and there was a very noticeable difference in performance. Maximum power doesn't increase dramatically, but the power under the curve is increased by a lot. Power is greater at all RPM's, and delivery is smoother. Highly recommend. The best $250 I ever spent. This includes unlimited revisions. I know u have to pass smog there, but u can have a tune for Torco race gas for example and keep hat as its own separate file for track use only and there is no additional charge. Had a great experience with Adam and just about everyone who's dealt with him will agree. Good luck and thanks for doing something good in the racing community

I brag about it all the time. :p

...but I'm looking for something different than most people. Lots of people just want more power and that's totally fine. I went with Stratified because of all of the little drivability things they do. It makes about the same power as everyone else depending on climate, but it drives in a noticeably different way to me. Throttle modulation is different. "Surge" is minimized. Rev Hang is basically gone. The little quality of life improvements on Strat make it the tune for me.

I will agree with that, the driveability part is defineteley improved , no more rev hang etc. Extra power, yes I did notice the car a bit faster but I don't have any Bolt-ons at all to know the difference
