Many of you have noticed while logging your cars, that you see instances of high knock-correction values and low-rpm and low load situations. There has been much speculation about the cause and effects of these occurrences.

To put your apprehension to rest, Tim Bailey, one of our most experienced and knowledgeable tuners has offered the following explanation of this phenomenon:

Modern engine control computers (ECU) monitor and constantly adjust engine parameters including fuel delivery, variable camshaft timing, and ignition timing. Under light load (low boost or vacuum conditions) the objective of this active adjustment is optimized fuel economy and power.

An important component of this active adjustment is changes to ignition timing. Utilizing the highest possible ignition timing is a simple way to enhance the mechanical energy for any given combustion cycle. This enhancement extracts the most torque for a given quantity of spent fuel.

The processes that manage optimal ignition timing at light load are complex and vary by vehicle type. Some ignition timing adjustments are active and based upon sensor feedback. One such sensor is the "knock sensor." This sensor is a simple microphone that listens for engine noise. Complex signal processing inside the ECU helps discriminate detonation from other types of engine noise. The thresholds for noise vs knock vary not only by engine speed but by engine load. The ECU will react to engine noise by actively removing ignition timing. This low-load "knock correction" is a normal and desirable process that promotes optimal ignition timing.

Other timing adjustments are programmed compensations that are predictive in nature. For example, on some vehicles a sharp increase in throttle position predicts a fast change in engine load. In preparation for a predicted change in engine load the ECU will preemptively remove some ignition timing. This compensation is not really knock correction at all but is instead a predictive ignition timing adjustment. Similar compensations exist for a variety of conditions including but not limited to changes in load, air temperature, boost temperature, and acceleration. Tuning strategies for predictive corrections vary by vehicle but are present in some form in every modern ECU.

Unfortunately, the monitors that allow us to monitor the ECU’s activities do not discriminate between predictive timing adjustments and those responding to sensor input. However, regardless of the type of compensatory timing adjustment, at LIGHT load, these corrections are a normal means with which to optimize power and fuel economy. Under light load there is simply not enough cylinder pressure to allow engine damage. As a result, light load "knock correction" is not something to worry about. This is a normal process that is even more apparent when utilizing stock calibrations designed to utilize a range of fuel quality.

I came upon this post when I searched "engine knock at low load and rpm". Came from an Evo forum, concerning what seems to be the same issue.
So, basically, keep your foot to the floor at all times to avoid knock conditions.

Thanks :)

Did the update today. All maps updated except the economy mode map. I guess that is what I wasn't understanding by the release notes. It's still v201. But I'm glad it's still there to use nonetheless. Time to see if anything feels different!

I love the new map! Power is there right away! There is a delay in torque/power delivery from the previous map.

Agreed. Feels much smoother and no lag whatsoever. Been running it for a week now and is a definite improvement.

btw...For those that recently updated COBB's new Access Tuner Race Program not sure if you noticed but it now has a new "Compare" feature where you can load up any primary "working" map and then load another map you'd like to compare it to ...This will highlight all changes / differences between the two maps selected...Its a very useful new feature and glad to see COBB added this!
I'm missing this and not noticing this feature. I can load a map, but if I try to load another map it will just load a new map. I don't see a 'compare' feature. What am I missing?

Yeah...The latest update released to the ATR program yesterday actually removed this feature! I spoke to Braden about this earlier today...COBB mistakenly added this "Compare" feature when they released the last major ATR update a few weeks ago... This feature should be only available for AccessTuner Pro users...bummer...

But thankfully I was able to make good use of the "compare" map feature for the short time it was available in ATR when updating a few of my custom tunes before COBB went ahead and removed it with the latest ATR update !

Well, crap. I even tried the update rollback feature and it fails. That's really unfortunate because the compare feature was an excellent tool. I used it extensively to check various maps. Oh well...

interesting, I just rolled back and now I see the "compare" option.
Nest time you need to update ATR it will be gone...make sure you make good use of this feature while you have it!

I tried rolling back myself...And its gone :(

COBB might consider at least bringing back a highlighting feature to ATR to show changes in the future...

I have ATR on more than one computer. I will leave one computer with ATR that has the "Compare" feature alone and not update that one, LOL.

good plan...

Thankfully I made good use out of the feature while it existed on mine...

Little bit of an annoying "glitch" maybe or oversight with the new update. Previously if you pressed the resume button with cruise control OFF the tach would flip to 1 or 2 indicating your map slot. It wouldn't do this when cruise was ON. However now since update, if you have cruise ON and hit your brake or disengage it then press "Resume" to resume the speed you had set the tach flips to your map slot every single time. Quite distracting and annoying especially doing highway driving at night now that it's dark so fast

I never noticed this with the latest update and tried to replicate it this morning several times and it didn't do it. My car is a 2014MY if that makes any difference.

It shouldn't make a difference, mine is a '14 and does it now. The FoST has always done this and I thought it was odd that the FiST didn't initially but never really cared. It's not annoying once you're accustomed to seeing it.

Interesting...

The map I'm currently running is based off of Stage 3 v220. May not make a difference, but there was a recent Accessport firmware update on 11/19 - 1.7.2.0-11414, do you guys also have that?

I had the opportunity to try again this afternoon and still could not replicate it with either the brake pedal or resume button.
