Mountune's new MR230 Upgrade Kit Revealed

I've been contemplating this as part of a winter upgrade from my MP215 state (which runs great). I traded some mail with the mountune folks today. I learned that I just need to add the mountune high-flow cat to run this tune (because of the stuff I already have). With that, the tune should approximate the expected results reasonably well and would not void any mountune (setting aside Ford considerations) warranty coverage that might exist on mountune parts.

I currently have these related parts:

  • mountune FMIC
  • MP215
  • mountune induction hose
  • mountune lower charge pipe
  • mountune boost plumbing hose clamps

The other boost hose and CBE bits in the complete kit do not contribute to the power enough to substantively affect the tune's gains (although mountune does not guarantee specific gains in any event). I have a Borla exhaust, but mountune suggested that the stock exhaust would be sufficient for this upgrade (so I'm assuming the Borla unit will work as well). All things considered, this tune is a fairly mild performance uptick. There is a bit of a bump of peak values, but it mostly seems to impact the duration of usable torque over a wider RPM band. That is handy in an HPDE track application when corner exiting and getting set to pass a slower driver.

I'm in no rush and will keep a lookout for possible discounts in the coming months.
Did they indicate if the MR kit is coming to the US, or was their response to get the high flow cat, MP215 kit, a couple hoses, and the MR tune to essentially do the same?

Are you asking if the MR230 kit is available in the U.S.? If so, yes:

My specific ask was regarding upgrading from my situation (explained in my post). Mountune USA responded with the minimum requirement for *me* being the high-flow cat (and of course the tune...and I believe the cam adjuster, although I did not ask about that).

Well shit, I didn't see it when I looked. I feel dumb. Carry on :D

I think I get 13% off of Mountune stuff which means this kit is $2565. For that price, it's a solid deal to gain almost 40hp and 40tq with parts that are made with excellent quality in mind.

I asked on the .net forum, apparently the US version doesn?t need/include (or doesn't have the adjust-ability) the cam tool.

Yeah, Ken mentioned that just today in an email when I asked about it.

He said this:

Ken Anderson via email said:
USA cars do not require a cam tool because we have more access to the cam timing via the Ford FGEK calibration as compared to the Bosch cal on the Euro cars.

Any news on a solid review of this kit yet? Also a comparison to the cobb stage 3?

Thanks

I'm ordering it this week and should have it on within the month. I'll let you know. Haven't driven a Cobb Stage 3. I'm working w/ Ford, and they are more friendly about Mountune. I can't wait.

Sorry- I never responded to this question. Actually, I totally forgot about this forum. I've had the full Mountune MR230 for around 6k miles now and had it on the track. Hopefully this will help anyone interested in it...

Overall, it's a really good kit. I Think it gives exactly the kick the car should be offered with off the lot. It isn't as hard core as what you would get from the Cobb Stage3 stuff. The Mountune tune is more conservative, but not overly tame. Personally, I find that it offers a very consistent and reliable improvement over stock, while still feeling like it was manufactured this way. For a FWD car, it's about all I can expect. I've been in more extreme, powerful FiSTs/ FoSTs. But they always "feel" modified. I'm not sure if that makes sense, or if anyone cares. The Mountune kit was made to all work together, and it shows. The car now feels like it did before, except "more". Do I want more still? Instead of going big turbo or more drastic options, I'd go with a different platform more suited to big power (I'm seriously considering a C5 Z-06 or C6 base). I realize that is just my taste, and others will keep pushing 'til it either flies or breaks. Which is fine. There's just a limit to the fun you can have FWD, and I've already gotten way more fun than I ever thought I would.

What don't I like? The first, and most glaring issue I had with it is that it doesn't include a RMM. I don't understand why, but It seems like an obvious oversight. Not a big worry, because they are cheap and easy to add. I've tried the Cobb, Boomba and finally settled on the PCe, which I love. It is right in between the other two for feel/ vibration and controlling that hard shift THUD. The other big negative is that it's pretty overpriced. I was in a situation were I could do it. I had Ford install the whole thing. I couldn't be happier with how the dealer has worked with me and have stood behind even the little things. That piece of mind is an intangible that was worth something. If I was really counting pennies and wanting the immediate, maximum bang for the buck, then piecing together good priced pieces from diverse manufacturers makes a lot of sense. Cobb Stage 3 would be in between those two options, most likely.

I've also added brake upgrades (StopTech rotors/ Hawk pads) and a Boomba short throw shifter. I haven't touched the suspension yet. It depends on if I keep it as a track car or get a more track only vehicle. The car is crazy fun on a track. The most fun you can have with FWD, in my experience/ opinion. I was keeping up with the 911s in the twisties and the added grunt helped keep me from getting destroyed every time the course straightened a little. The Mustangs and Vipers would still overpower me, but they'd go skittering off in the grass when I pushed them hard enough into the turns. It wasn't entirely the Miata "momentum" game any longer. I could actually still have a little fun putting the right foot down, not just keeping off of the left one. That is the best endorsement of the Mountune MR230 I can give. I then drove 5 hours home, with no issues and the temp remaining normal in 90 degree heat.
