I have overheated my Fiesta ST twice in the last month and am now taking it in under warranty. Model year is 2014 and is 100% stock with no tunes or anything running on it. I am more posting this for anyone else with the issue to look at and either learn from or chime in with their own solutions. I know that in both circumstances, I was behaving in a way that is not ideal for temperature management, but given that they are newer performance oriented cars this shouldn't be as big an issue as it is.
I care for this vehicle constantly, I clean it for about 8 hours a week, change the oil every 10K km's and clean the air intake filter every month. I don't abuse it or track it or anything like that. I have had it for about 2.5 years and have not changed my driving habits or routes during this time.
Overheat 1:
Quickly (shifting at 5K RPM) accelerating up a hill in about 25 Celsius (77 Fahrenheit), vehicle overheated slightly and I slowed down to allow it to cool. This overheat wasn't that severe, just sudden lack of acceleration and temp gauge all the way to "H". No alarm or warning light.
Overheat 2:
Stop and go traffic in about 28 Celsius (84 Fahrenheit), I admit that air con. was on full and that I was using the engine to slow the vehicle by downshifting or just keeping it in 2nd or 3rd rather than using the brakes to slow and manage speed. Limp mode was engaged.
I noticed simultaneously that there was a sudden lack of power, the red temperature light was on, the gauge was all the way to "H" and the alarm had started to chime. I pulled over, turned off the AC, opened the hood and kept the vehicle running (for the electric fan, which was running). Temperature quickly returned to normal and for the rest of the hour's drive home it was never past the 50% mark on the temp gauge. Limp mode was engaged.
I am taking the vehicle in, out of an abundance of caution, to a Ford dealer for service. I will update this thread on what is done (if anything) so that others can learn. If anyone else can chime in, that would be great! If anyone can give me an accurate estimate if I should be concerned about damage to the turbocharger due to the heat, that would be great too!
Thanks,
